When it comes to dieting, weight loss and achieving an overall healthy nutrition, we are well aware of the staples: Get enough rest, make better food choices, drink enough water, move more with an exercise regime. We may not realize it though, but our thoughts also play a pivotal role in achieving success. The mind is an extremely powerful instrument that can either be used to our advantage or a disadvantage on our way to a more healthy lifestyle. Before we can change the way we eat, or the food choices we are to make, we need to first realize that what we think of food, and our mental relationship with it needs to change. True enough, before we can achieve that sound body, we have to maintain a sound mind first. Here's how:

Define what food is to you. In literal sense food is defined as any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. However, as we go along in life, we develop a personal definition of what food is. Oftentimes, our personal definition becomes the root of the health and weight problems we encounter later in life. For instance, emotional eaters define food as an extension of an emotion. People who eat when they are happy often identify food as their source of happiness, while people who eat when they are upset define food as an escape from their upsetting situation. People with eating disorders also define food as a form of punishment. To be able to go back to a healthy nutrition, we also need to go back to the basic definition of food. Food is fuel, consumed to give the body its nourishment. No more, no less.

Keep your thoughts positive. We all know how empowering positive thoughts are, so why not use these to strengthen your intention of achieving healthy nutrition and eating more appropriately. We are our own best critic and often we drown ourselves with negative thoughts that prevent us from reaching success. Constantly focusing on what you cannot eat and limiting yourself with food choices, instead of being open to healthier eating habits create negative thought patterns. These can sabotage your efforts to living more healthily. When we feel weakened, depressed, or unmotivated, it is easier to munch on a bag of fried chips or skip your next exercise routine. However, if you tune into how you feel, listen more carefully on your own thoughts and acknowledge them, you can transform these negative thoughts into something more powerful and positive that actually help you to achieve your goal of having a more healthy nutrition.

Surround yourself with resources that can help your efforts. When you take on the challenge to creating a healthier lifestyle alone, it is harder to succeed. You need to surround yourself with people to help and motivate you. This can be a mentor, a family member, a significant other or a friend. Having someone to discuss ideas, thoughts and feelings, and share experiences with helps tremendously when you start to feel frustrated or lonely. You can also learn from reading resources that can help teach you ways to become healthier. One great way is to also read biographies of successful people, those who you aspire to be like, or those who have been in a similar situation as you. Finding out what difficulties they faced, and how they solved their problems, will be motivating and inspiring.
Remember, we are only as good as the thoughts we think. When we become more mindful of what we think of ourselves, and how we relate with food, the more we can become successful in changing our lives to become more healthy. A sound mind is a great weapon, and when we use it well, it spells out absolute health and success, every time.
