When we talk about oral medicines the first thing that comes to our mind is either a tablet or a capsule. Capsules consist of encapsulated shell. This shell is filled with medicine. This medicine will be in powder form or in the form of a gel etc. Let us have a look at the different types of capsules.
 
 
From the name it is clear that these capsules are hard. These capsules consist of gelatine shells and therndrug in the form of powder is held in the space in these shells. The shells have a cylindrical shape. One shell will be longer with smaller diameter and the other one will be shorter with bigger diameter. You can easily open these type capsules
 
2. Soft gelatin capsules:
 
These are soft and elastic. The drug ingredients are in the liquid form. The ingredients can be vitamins or some essential oil. It is not possible to open these capsules. Heating process is used to seal these capsules.
 
3. Enteric coated capsules:
 
These capsules will specifically release the drug in the intestine. They will not disintegrate in the stomach. They will release the drug only after they reach the intestine. These capsules are soluble only in the basic pH which is present in the intestine. It is not soluble in the acidic pH which is present in the stomach.
 
4. Sustained release capsules:
 
These capsules are designed in such a way that they will release the drugs slowly. The main reasonrnfor this is that it will help in giving a prolonged effect. It is sufficient to take a single capsule and it will remain effective almost throughout the day.
 
5. Rectal capsules:
 
As the name suggests they are to be inserted in the rectum so that the patient can get immediate effect.

Gelling agents like gelling agents and plant polysaccharides are mainly used in the manufacturingrnof capsules. Vegetable capsules are made from a cellulose polymer called hypromellose. On the other hand gelatine capsules will have collagen, plasticizers, sorbitol, lubricants, disintegrants etc. Preservatives are also added. Different ingredients are added to change the hardness of the capsule.
