Recently when people talk about buying a new car, the topic of turbochargers usually comes up. But most people actually don't know very well what a turbocharger is or how it works. Well, I will try to explain that in this short article and to show you my opinion about if it's worthwhile buying a car with such a thing installed and what are the benefits.

First let's see what a turbocharger is and how it works. When an automobile engine works, the fuel must be mixed with air in the cylinders to cause an explosion which produces the power to get your car move. Turbochargers are simply a type of forced induction system. They compress the air flowing into the engine so that more fuel and air can be burned in the cylinders, and the result is about 50% increase in power.

So you see when using a turbocharger, the engine can put out increased power in proportion to its displacement. That's great news if you want to buy a small displacement car, because you can save a lot of money on gas and meanwhile you don't have to sacrifice much speed or the fun of driving. When you need to go fast or to pass someone the increased power created by turbochargers can help you speed up easily and smoothly.

A small displacement car means low exhaust emissions. Also turbochargers recycle the air used by the engine, which decreases the amount of fumes released into the atmosphere. That's both more economical and greener than the car with only a conventional automobile engine.

Turbochargers make it safer for you to drive too. If you live in a mountain area, they can prevent the loss of power in climbing the steep roads.

Compared to a naturally aspirated engine that produces the same amount of power, a turbocharged engine can deliver much greater torque which improves performance of the car on the road and make driving a real pleasure.

Nowadays the technology of turbocharging has become much more mature than before. Problems seldom happen to turbochargers especially when you take good care of them. In normal circumstances their working life can be up to 20 years, or even as long as that of your car. If you pay attention to the maintenances, turbochargers don't cost much money at all.

So, to sum it up, I think it is very wise and also the best choice to buy a turbocharged car. It saves you money and provides you excellent performance.
