Diagnosing Breast Cancer
Diagnosing breast cancer is not easy at initial stage; however breast screening is the method that can detect cancer when it is not too large to be noticed by palpation or other methods of detection although each method is beneficial for one reason or the other because each aims to benefit and help women in terms of early detection. Some useful methods that help to catch cancer at initial stage are
Palpation
Palpation can be defined as the method of feeling breasts through manual inspection that is done with the help of hands. This method is used to feel breasts for lumps and surrounding tissues. Lump can be different in size, shape, structure, texture and whether it moves easily or is fixed. Tumors are divided into benign and cancerous cells and both these lumps have different characteristics.
Mammography
Mammography is a screening technique and it is based on taking two X-rays of each breast from different angles so that the whole breast can be examined thoroughly and no abnormality remains unchecked. It is possible that an area of breast or lump is not clear on mammogram extra X-rays are recommended. If a mammogram is abnormal other tests are recommended as well to ensure that what does the suspicious sign indicates.
Ultrasonography
In this method high frequency sound waves are used to check if the lump is solid or fluid filled sack. It is used mostly in combination with mammography. Doctors decide after using all these examinations whether more tests and examinations are required or not and which treatment is suitable for which abnormality. In case of fluid filled sack doctors remove fluid and tissues from breasts to make a diagnosis and there are two ways to get fluid and tissues from breasts.
Surgical Biopsy
In this method surgeons cut out the lump or only a specific area of the lump and then it is examined by a pathologist under microscope to ensure the cells are cancerous or not. Aspiration or Needle Biopsy
In this method a needle is used to get sample of fluid or tissues from the lump, it is also ensured through this method the lump is fluid filled or solid. Special techniques are used to remove tissues from the suspicious area through needle.
When Cancer Is Diagnosed?
A pathologist can tell at the time of diagnosis that whether breast cancer is invasive or non- invasive and what is the type of lump. Diagnosis of cancer is difficult, but when it is diagnosed the next step is more difficult to decide about the treatment procedure because there is a number of treatment options and to go for the appropriate one helps to get rid of cancer successfully.
