Yoga was introduced to the world by India, where the practice is an ancient one, developed by the ancient cultures there as a way of leading a holistic life for spiritual, mental and physical health. It is a way, according to the Indian or Hindu tradition, which helps us to evolve both mentally and spiritually and while doing this we take care of our bodies too, by the practice of certain exercises or asanas. Hatha yoga is also said to prepare the body for higher forms of meditation or a higher possibility of energy, meaning for an upsurge of energy, hatha yoga ‘clears the pipeline’ of the body to enjoy this increased energy. What are the benefits of Hatha yoga? - Fitness and health benefits: Hatha Yoga induces calm, increases flexibility, improves balance and thus makes you less prone to accidents. One can lose weight with regular yoga practice. It helps with disorders such as binge eating by introducing a wholesome lifestyle. - Medical benefits: It alleviates chronic conditions such as backaches and neck pains. It relieves conditions like sinusitis, insomnia, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and asthma. - Improves Awareness: helps focus on your inner self taking your attention away from the outside world. Your body, breath and mind are aligned and you are aware of yourself more and how you react to situations. - Spiritual Development: the goal of Hatha yoga is this. Spiritual development is achieved by releasing the energy flowing throughout your body and balancing the opposing aspects of your body. ‘Ha’ and ‘tha’ actually mean the sun and the moon or the ‘hot’ and ‘cooling’ aspects or even the masculine and feminine aspects of a being. Many a yoga studio or centre de yoga as they are called imparts hatha yoga or yoga basics to a wide section of population the world over. Young and old, men, women and children, yoga benefits all.
