Ack Ack Stakes, Honouring the Top Class Thoroughbred

The 1960’s horse racing arena was mainly dominated by horses that were gifted with endurance. During the same time, Battle Joined, a lightly raced but mostly a winner at graded stakes, such as the Lawrence Realization and Saratoga Specials, bred Fast Turn. The foal, Ack Ack, happened to be breeder, Harry Guggenheim’s last bred horse. rnTrained initially into his two year old season by Woody Stephens, Ack Ack rarely ran. His raced very limited during his maiden season, starting only thrice but pulling off all in the money. His most prominent racing season began as he grew older and developed better skills and racing style. rnTrained by Frank Bonsal, Ack Ack did showcased his speciality at stakes race as soon as he set off as a potential three year old. In his sophomore season, Ack Ack started a total of 11 times, winning 7 of them. He finished runner up in 3. As a three year old, he won the Arlington Stakes, Wither Stakes and the Bahamas Stakes. Derby Trial and the Forerunner Stakes was no exception. Ack Ack closed his three year old season with earnings worth $180,000 approximately.rnAs a four year old, Ack Ack was turned over to renowned trainer, Charlie Whittingham, for further training. It was quite evident already that Charlie Whittingham had a fine thoroughbred at hand and he realized that winning was going to come quite easily to this racing prodigy. rn1970, Ack Ack’s four year old season may not have been the most dramatic season but whatever limited number of races were run, they were lined with victories. He clearly won the Los Angeles Handicap followed by Autumn Days Handicap. He started in 5 races winning 4 of them. rnAck Ack continued racing into his five year old season finishing runner up at the Palos Verdes Handicap. His winning spree began soon after with the San Carlos Handicap, followed by the San Pasqual, San Antonio and the Santa Anita Handicap. Ack Ack romped the Hollywood Express Handicap, the American Handicap and the Hollywood Gold Cup. 1971, witnessed Ack Ack starting in 8 races, winning 7 of them and finishing all in the money. That year his annual earnings soared to $393,000. He was awarded by the Eclipse for three separate categories, the Champion Older Male Horse, Champion Sprint Horse and the Horse of the Year. rnAck Ack was retired soon after his magnificent racing season to stud duty where he produced 40 successful stakes winners.
