Struggling with acne? Do you shy away every time you have to meet someone new because of acne? Is acne driving you up the wall? As one of the most common skin condition in the United States, it affects 40 to 50 million people. However, help is at hand. A number of new therapies have emerged to help people deal with this embarrassing condition. Red light therapy is one of the new treatment procedures being used to treat acne. It is used as a standalone treatment procedure as well as in combination with topical treatments and other light therapies. Here in this article we will take a look at all the important things you should know about red light therapy as a treatment for acne. Red Light Therapy for Acne: Effectiveness According to a research conducted in 2007 by J.I. Na along with D.H. Suh, published in “Dermatologic Surgery”, red light therapy seems to be effective for treating acne. Twenty eight patients suffering from mild to moderate acne were studied. One half of the face of every patient was treated randomly with red light, twice a day, for about 15 minutes over a period of eight weeks. After the end of the eight week testing period, it was noticed that the side treated with red light has lesser lesions. Another 2007 study published in “Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management”, conducted by Natusho Konishi along with colleagues revealed that red light therapy was not only effective for application on the face but also other parts of the body as well. The study was conducted on 29 random women, where it was found that diode laser treats acne on the face as well as the back effectively. Red Light Therapy for Acne: How it Works Red light therapy for treating acne makes use of state of the art equipment to emit light of a particular wavelength (usually 633 nanometers). When red light at this wavelength is applied on the skin, it stimulates the body’s natural healing process, making it one of the best ways to treat acne covered areas. Some redness might appear in the red light treated areas; however, they clear away quickly. More importantly, the benefits of red light therapy are not just limited to treating acne. The healing process stimulated by red light also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, thereby helping reduce signs of aging.
