Acne is one of the leading causes of skin problems. Including men and women, statistics show that 80 percent of the population suffers from it. Although acne breakouts usually resolve on its own, in other cases, it may require special treatment.

There are many theories on why acne happens but the main reason behind it is said to be the increase of sebum secretion.

Causes of acne:
Research shows the puberty age group affected most by acne. During this phase, secretion of androgen tends to rise, fueling sebum secretion. This process leads to frequent breakouts.

When one passes the puberty years, however, acne may still occur in adulthood. This stems from an imbalance in skin physiology. Reasons for this imbalance may include things such as lifestyle changes, improper eating habits, lax hygiene, hormones, stress, and reaction to a particular cosmetic line.

There are multiple causes for breakouts. Despite the reason, acne should be treated in a timely manner so it doesn’t worsen or lead to permanent scaring.

With so much information out there about adult acne, there still remains a swirl of myths. Hearing a repeated one tends to put it on top of a factual pedestal. Below are a few popular myths to “knock off” if they pop up in conversation.

1. Adult Acne Is Identical To Teenage Acner
This is a false. Adult acne, starting in someone’s 20s can stretch out to their 50s. Unlike teenage acne which is a combination of whiteheads and blackheads sprinkled on the entire face, adult acne is generally restricted to red blemishes near the mouth.

2. Sunscreen Fuels Adult Acne
Just like finding the right makeup and cosmetic line, the same holds true for sunscreen. If adult acne remains a concern, the rule of thumb is to use a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based sunscreen. These ingredients physically obstruct ultraviolet radiation.

3. Adult Acne Will Go Away If Left Untreated
For some, this is not true. If acne remains the same for more than a week or worsens, then chances are intervention might be needed. Scheduling an appointment with a skin care professional is a good idea since they can prescribe the right treatment regimen for the breakout.

More tips to avoid and help breakouts:
There is a lengthy list of acne treatments for every skin type. The goal of each is to minimize breakouts while helping to restore clearer skin. While on a treatment system, some other things to consider are:

  • Maintain good hygiene. This may include washing the affected area a couple times a day. An antibacterial face wash may also be used. However, for those with dry skin, it’s best to avoid soap containing gels since it may aggravate facial dryness.
  • Consider daily exercise to boost the body’s immunity.
  • It is said that emotional stress may cause acne so living a stress-free life is optimal for your skin and your whole body.

• As mentioned before, if acne breakouts persist, do schedule an appointment with a skin care professional.
With so many avenues to take, there’s an array of possibilities to help get rid of acne.

Special note: To camouflage acne, a light layer of cosmetic mineral powder is the best tool that won’t clog pores.
