Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese process which promotes natural healing within a person to improve overall bodily function. The method requires extreme precision, as tiny needles are inserted into specific points throughout the body. If you’re thinking about a career in acupuncture, it’s essential you choose the correct school or college that provides the best acupuncture program for you. In order to be admitted to an accredited acupuncture school, there are a few skills you must possess. Communication is a key skill in the field of acupuncture. In order to properly diagnose a problem, skilled professionals must first listen carefully to the symptoms a patient may have. Also, you must be comfortable with the process of needle insertion. When it comes to learned skills, education in basic biology can be a fantastic foundation for specialization in acupuncture. On top of that, any previous courses in subjects such as English, math, and sciences such as physics and chemistry are all valued when it comes to qualifying for placement into an acupuncture studies program. On the road to your degree in acupuncture, one of the main subjects taught will be the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM. This will apply the understanding that health is a state of balance within our bodies, and that diseases or poor function is the result of an imbalance. The main focus surrounding balance within the body is clear energy flow, also known as ‘Chi’, that run along specific lines along the body. When studying, you will usually train for two years at an undergraduate level. Many students are also required to complete a bachelor’s degree before admission, similar to medical school. Most acupuncture degrees are arranged as masters programs that can be completed over a three year period of time. If you choose to enroll in a graduate level acupuncture program, your studies will include subjects such as physiology, ethics, pharmacology, anatomy, neural systems, acupuncture techniques and communication. Courses may also include lessons on Qi pathways, which are the meridians, or energy lines that flow throughout the body, energetic pathogenesis, patterns of disharmony and western medical disorders. If you are unsure what subjects your acupuncture training will cover, then the best thing to do is contact the school or college’s admissions staff, who should be able to go over any questions you may have. Once your acupuncture education is complete, you can chose to specialize in a range of different fields. For example, you may choose to work with people who suffer from asthma or allergies, women suffering from menopause, pain management, orthopedic ailments or any other form of physical impairment. Demand for professional acupuncturists has grown in recent years along with the salary range. The average salary for acupuncturists can range anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000 a year. Jobs are regularly becoming available. Some of the most popular places of employment for acupuncturists include hospitals or medical clinics, academic universities, research institutes or private practices, long-term care facilities or as a practitioners assistant. If you’re considering training for acupuncture, make sure you look into all the schools and colleges available. Always do your research in order to find the school or college that's best for you, and before you know it you will be walking away with a degree in your hand, and a new career ahead of you.
