Some believe that the advancements in cancer treatments have come by too slowly, especially if they have had a relative or loved one die from cancer, but actually medical science has come forward by leaps and bounds in advanced cancer treatments. As you study and look into the progressions in such treatments you will be positively astounded. You see today’s treatments differ from what was in the past in that today they design treatments in order to reestablish the body's individual immune, self-governing, and healing mechanisms to not only recognize but eliminate cancer cells. Granted the majority of all cancer treatments today require state-of-the-art technology, and as in all technology, new advances are being made daily. You must be aware of that if you have had to change from BETA to VCR to those machines that only accept CDs now in just one example. The other example to get you to understand better how quickly technology is changing is probably your cell phone. It too changed quickly from one that was the size of a loaf of bread to what we now know of today, almost a paper thin cell phone which can be used to not only get and make calls but also to search the Internet, watch movies, and watch TV on them! Advanced cancer treatments are no different. Few people understand the difference between chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy today consists of giving you drugs which actively seek out your cancer and kills those cancer cells and shrinks your tumor. When undergoing chemotherapy today, you probably won’t lose one hair due to the chemo unless your cancer is on your head and radiation therapy is utilized, and unlike the radiation treatments of long ago, rarely does someone now have to suffer radiation burns on good healthy bodily parts. You see, today chemotherapy and radiation therapy can pinpoint exactly where to put the cancer destroying radiation and such. Also, today they cycle chemotherapy so that your body does not weaken the way that it used to prior to cycling it. What that means is that you will be set up for chemotherapy for X amount of days, and then you will receive time to get over that, build up your strength once more before the next cycle is scheduled. Gone are the days of long hospital stays due to chemotherapy although your oncologist, the cancer specialist, will want to watch you carefully to see that all goes as intended. They truly have it down today, as you will find out when you hear that they will have a chemotherapy team set up for you. By the way, you should know that the drugs are administered by various means. For some it is in pill form, sometimes liquids, and for some it needs to be injected. Some however, need to be given to you via your veins, much as you may have received plasma or other things intravenously. Also it is interesting to note that chemotherapy must have an easy thousand different drugs involved. Of course different drugs are given for different types of cancer. It is fascinating to find out where your drug came from, and often you may find that it’s directly from Mother Nature, as it came from some plant or other. As for feeling any after effects from chemotherapy, again and again people are told that everyone is different, but the most common side effect is feeling worn out, and tired. Some bounce away with no side effects at all, others need a few days of rest. Often people are also warned that various kinds of chemotherapy many lower their natural defenses, thus they are warned against being around people with colds, and are told that they should have all their shots, including flu shots, long before undergoing chemotherapy. After chemotherapy is begun, various tests will be utilized by your oncologist to see if your tumor is responding to the chemotherapy. Some will be accomplished by touching your skin where the tumor is located and measuring the size of the tumor, some will involve cell counts or blood tests, or perhaps they will need to do a tumor marker test most of which can be done via blood tests or through your urine or your stool, again depending on what kind of cancer you may have.
