Charcot foot is one of those foot diseases that are hard to detect in early stages. But, if it is not detected at an early stage, treating the problem successfully becomes just impossible. This is major reason why doctors advise people to have regular health checkups. Health checkups at regular intervals not only detect diseases at an early stage but also help in getting immediate treatment. So, if you are experiencing trivial symptoms like swelling and pain in your foot, consult a doctor right away. The doctor can diagnose the exact problem and suggest treatment accordingly. Like most of the foot diseases, Charcot Foot can be treated with both non-surgical and surgical treatments. The choice of treatment is based on different factors and it is better to leave the decision on your doctor. However, it is the patient on whom the treatment is conducted and thus he should be aware of types of treatment as well. For readers’ convenience, the treatments have been categorized in two categories – non-surgical and surgical. Let us elaborate on both the types of Charcot foot treatment. Non-Surgical Treatment In the beginning, doctors try to treat the problem with non-surgical methods only. Patients must cooperate with the doctor and follow his instructions thoroughly. 1.Customized Shoes – Since Charcot foot makes it difficult for the patient to move, special shoes have been designed to make walking easier for such individuals. The shoes have special inserts and give maximum comfort to the wearer. 2.Immobilization – Charcot Foot weakens the muscles and in certain cases modifies the shape of the foot altogether. The muscles and joints become weak to bear the body weight and this is the point where doctors take help of immobilization. Under this non-surgical treatment, the patient is advised to have complete bed rest. In case he wants to move, he should use wheel chair. The ultimate purpose of immobilization is to not exert pressure on muscles and joints in the affected foot. rn3.Modification in Lifestyle – Doctors also advise patients to modify their lifestyle for best results. Patients are also made to do specific exercises that help in preventing the problem from occurring again. Surgical Treatment Though non-surgical treatments are successful but there are instances when the problem cannot be cured with these methods. As a result, doctors take help of surgical methods to provide relief from Charcot foot. Charcot foot and Bunion surgery should be performed only by certified and experienced surgeons.
