Ever wonder why people need to go to alcohol rehab centers? Why, even, is alcohol something that you need to be rehabilitated from? Everyone enjoys a drink, right? It's a major part of the culture of growing up, of celebrating, and of having a good time. It's a part of almost every right of passage, from graduations, to weddings, to hirings and retirements. Alcohol companies sponsor some of our favorite sports events, and advertising is a multi-billion dollar punch to the economy. For all of that presence, however, that enjoyment of alcohol can certainly can go too far.

First of all, since alcohol is legal in most of the world when you're over a certain age, there are often no laws to prevent or restrict how much you drink privately. However, various states of public drunkenness and, of course, drunk driving, are definitely illegal.

How much you drink privately and not when operating a vehicle or other machinery, however, is a personal matter, and one that many people deal with the ill effects of. That is where alcohol rehab centers come into play.

See, the problem with alcohol is when it becomes a controlling factor in your life, and potentially causes you to injure yourself or others, or if you allow your drunken behavior to negatively impact your life or the lives of the people around you. These negative impacts can be mental, physical, emotional or financial.

One thing to be aware of is that abusing alcohol is different than being an alcoholic. Currently, doctors say that alcoholism is not so much about how much you drink, it's that you can't control yourself when you're drinking. You can drink all day long and not be an alcoholic if you are in control of yourself. It might not be healthy, but it's not the medical condition. Doctors are looking into if there is a genetic consideration of alcoholism as well.

Alcohol rehab centers, as such, help anyone in trouble because of alcohol. They are staffed by doctors, caretakers, and other professionals who understand what you're going through and know the best and most efficient ways to help you get your desired result. They break old patterns and make new ones. They sober you up and start you over.

There are various treatments, depending on the center. Most will start out with a period of detox. No more alcohol. Let it sweat out of your system. Then, some will start you with a 12-step process, where you learn about alcoholism as if it's a disease. Others will put you into therapy, either one-on-one or in groups, to talk about the underlying reasons for your decisions. What's really going on, they wonder, that you could be putting yourself in this situation?

Some alcohol rehab centers get quite the publicity, with celebrities checking in to kick their habits. Passages in Malibu is one, and the Betty Ford Center, in Rancho Mirage, are two examples. Even the rich and famous need help with their lives, sometimes!
