Corrections Officer: ProloguernA person in charge of maintaining the security, law and order of correctional facilities like jails, prisons or any other type of secured custody is known as corrections officer.rnA variety of responsibilities are entitled to them. These includes peace keeping within the correctional facilities, enforcing and maintaining rules and disciplines, transporting inmates to the courts or other secured facilities etc. to even maintaining proper medical facility and food supply with in the prisons. A basic need for corrections officer is to act according to situation. There might be times when hostile situations may arise. They need to deal it tactfully and ensure that law and order is restored.rnThe TestrnThe candidates need to prove themselves through an exam which may be either written or even video-based. A written test is being conducted to select the eligible candidates which extend up to 3 hours. This test originated a long time ago. The test was designed to select the best candidates for this job.rnThe format of the test is generally written comprising of four to six sections wherein candidates have to answer a variety of questions on different topics. The first three sections include objective questions on grammar and English comprehension and mathematics. The final sections are based on incident report writing. Here, the candidates are provided with situations based on which they have to write the answers. This part tests the ability of the candidates to judge and react under hostile conditions. Examination Tipsrn• The first and foremost thing the candidates must do is to answer all the questions. There are no negative markings, so candidates should attempt a question even if they don’t know the answerrn• Separate time limit is provided for each section of the test. Candidates will be informed about the time limits every section. As such, they should manage their time properly. • To increase their chances of getting selected, candidates must try to score maximum marks and try to be on top of the merit list. Requirements relating to age, education etc. The age requirements may vary state wise. Generally the age requirement is kept between 18-21 years. As for the educational requirements, minimum qualification of high school education is required. The Federal Bureau of Prisons prefers that applicants should atleast have bachelor's degree. It may be three years of full-time experience in counseling and supervision of individuals or a combination of college study and counseling work. TrainingrnThe training period vary according to the size of the prisons. It may last form One to Six months. The training may take place in the department of correction, an academy, or in the prison itself. It includes courses in the principles, practices, terminology, and rules of modern correctional methods. Personal defense, physical restraint of prisoners, and the use of guns are also studied. rnCompensationsrnThe main part of any job is its salary. As stated by the Department of Labor of the United States, the average annual wages for correction officers was $38,380 during the month of May, 2008. The recent surveys show that the figure has been raised. It has become $39,324 in an average basis.
