Grapefruit seed oil is an acidic liquid citrus oil derived from the seeds, pulp and white membranes of grapefruit. It is also known as grapefruit seed extract or GSE. It is found in commercial and homemade beauty products. It is a food supplement too. Discover the benefits and cautions of using this oil for internal and external health.
Grapefruit seed extract has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. It has superior antioxidants benefits with a high content of vitami
C and E. It will not clog skin pores and can improve the overall complexion of skin. Its antioxidants help neutralize damaging free radicals slowing the visible signs of skin aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.
It is not only found in topical skin care products but is used orally, also. It enhances the immune system, helps detoxify the body, lessens digestive upset, lessens ear and throat inflammation, ( caused by the flu ). Cancer Prevention Research suggests it suppresses the development of colon cancer and more.
CAUTION! Grapefruit seed extract can cause severe medical reactions. It should never be used at full strength since it can cause eye and skin irritation. If you have a citrus allergy do not ingest or use externally. If your skin becomes red, inflamed, irritated or develops a rash discontinue use, immediately. Always seek the advice of your medical professional before using when in doubt.
MAKING HOMEMADE SOAP
Grapefruit seed oil has it pros and cons for making homemade soap. It can be used in homemade soap recipes but it is not always recommended. Grapefruit seed extract is excellent to prevent rancidity in oils. The fruit pulp can grow bacteria but it is highly unlikely that could happen. Some claim grapefruit seed extract helps preserve and extend the lifespan of soap, but you may want to ask yourself first, "What is in my homemade soap that I need to preserve?" Your soap may not require the use of a preservative. To extend good condition of homemade soap, use oils with a long shelf life, store your soap in a cool, dry, place away from the heat of the sun. Grapefruit seed extract can cause accelerated trace and react with other fragrances causing soap to seize. Seized soap is just like mashed potatoes and is never a good thing. If this happens, it is best to just throw out the batch and start making soap all over again. Also, soap by its nature is a great antibacterial agent all by itself.
