A millwright is a tradesman who is involved in the construction and maintenance of machinery. These people were supposed to be specialist carpenters who had the practical knowledge about the working of gearing, shafts and mechanical belts. Their services were of utmost importance to the food and agricultural and processing units for wood and paper. The word ‘will’ in millwright actually refers to the origin of building mills powered by wind or water. For example, flour mills, sawmills etc. Many outstanding engineering were trained as millwrights. As time passed by, their services were pressed into other the earlier textile mills and other manufacturing units. Time has advanced and so have the responsibilities of industrial millwrights. The modern day millwright is actively involved in construction of machinery for assembly lines, and other utility machinery. Millwrights are responsible for the assembly of unassembled machinery when it arrives at the job site. Their knowledge should cover the load bearing capabilities of various equipments with the blueprints and technical specifications and instructions. They must be able to read blueprints and assemble machinery accordingly. Using various tools – both manual and electrically operated – he must be able to lead the team of workers in assembling and dismantling of machinery. An industrial millwright is expected to have knowledge about arc welding and cutting. Millwrights are actively involved in the routine tasks such as maintenance of machinery, lubrication of machinery and replacement of damaged parts. Industrial millwrights by nature of their profession need to have a wide understanding of mechanical aspects. They may be working on a gas turbine today and they may be installing a conveyor belt at an airport the following week. They are very flexible when it comes to construction aspects. Experienced millwrights are often in demand as teachers for millwright courses where their experience is invaluable and potential millwrights get insights into the kind of jobs that they will be required to undertake. Most millwrights opt for apprenticeship in the primary levels where they get theoretical as well as on-job raining. They are educated in various other aspects like welding, cutting, fabrication, and installation of various mechanical systems. They are also introduced to a series of safety guidelines that are required to be followed when at work. The industrial millwright has gone a long way from being a specialized carpenter to a person who has a deep knowledge of the working of mechanical machinery. Millwrights have gone to establish contractual firms which provide millwright services. They have graduated to become the backbone of all the manufacturing units with specialization in handling mechanical machinery. Contact Us:rnINTEGRITY MILLWRIGHTS INC.
