Everyone recommends that breastfeeding is important for the baby for the first 4-5 months. While for the moms who cannot breastfeed their babies can choose to give them baby formula which is made to replicate breast milk.

However, for the parents who need or want to give formula to their infants, there’s hardly such a straightforward recommendation. There are a number of baby formulas available in the market that choosing the right one may seem overwhelming.

If you really wish to buy formula for your baby then opt for Hipp formula USA as they are considered as the best among them all.

Although, have a look at these different types of baby formulas that are available in the market.

Formulas for Children with Acid Reflux or Colic

Most of the baby formulas are made from traditional cow’s milk protein formula. While there are anti-reflux formulas available in the market that are marketed to help treat children with spit up. Though gastroesophageal reflux is universal in babies, most children who are spitting up and are growing well will not require any treatment or change in formula.

Nowadays there are only two brands that make formulas for children with acid reflux: Enfamil AR and Similac, where rice has been added to the formula to help decrease spit-up.

Such formulas are lactose-free or contain limited lactose and include higher whey to casein ratio in order to mimic breast milk. Some formula may also contain partially broken down whey protein that can be easy to digest and may decrease gas production. On the other hand, some formulas may contain prebiotics and probiotics which is also known to decrease gas and symptoms of colic.

Calories in Formula to Mimic Breast Milk

These formulas contain about 20 calories per ounce as it is estimated that breast milk contains between 18-20 calories per ounce. That is the reason why some formulas have changed the concentration so that they contain 19 calories per ounce when mixed. While one calorie up or down doesn’t make a major difference but can be important if your child is not gaining weight appropriately.

Preparation of Different Types of Formula

The baby formula comes in different forms such as powder, concentrate, and ready-to-feed. Mostly, baby formulas are in powder form where you need to place two ounces of water in the bottle and then add one level scoop of powder formula in the bottle to make baby formula.

Further, if you are using concentrate formula then it should be mixed at a one-to-one ratio with water. Last but not least is the ready-to-eat formula which is ready-to-serve without any additional contents.

How Long Does a Formula Last?

You can make a prepared bottle of formula which can be kept at room temperature for more than an hour. If you have warmed the formula, don’t keep it for more than an hour and also do not rewarm it as it increases the risk of harmful bacteria growth.

Once opened, unused ready-to-feed formula or concentrate formula should be refrigerated and should be used within 48-hours. While powdered formula should be used within 48 hours.

Special Formulas Are Also Available

There are also special formulas available in the market if your child has allergies to cow’s milk formulas. You can also get soy free formula if your child is suffering from soy milk formulas. However, there are extensively hydrolyzed protein and amino acid formulas available which contains small peptide proteins.
