A migraine is recognized to be a burning health issue in the present days. This condition is known to affect at least one person in 10. Ayurvedic therapies, sudden lifestyle changes, and medicines play an integral role in Migraine Treatment. This condition is known as Sooryavarta in the Ayurvedic form of medicine. Soorya indicates Sun whereas avarta indicates blockage or affliction. The pain gets worsened during sunrise, noon hours and reduces post evening. Though it is believed to be the typical feature of this condition, it does not hold true in every case. Symptoms may differ in accordance with the habit and type of the body.
A migraine may result due to additional stimulation of blood and brain vessels. This type of pain is related to one-sided throbbing pain along with vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to light. A number of people get warning symptoms such as aura that have visual changes.
Causes of a migraine
In accordance with Ayurveda, migraine is caused owing to indigestion, suppression of natural urges, intaking polluted food, jealousy, anger, stress, grief, exposure to the sunshine for a longer period of time, in taking pungent, dry and salty food.
A migraine may also cause owing to intake of alcohol, smoking, intaking of tea and coffee all of a sudden, changes in the hormonal levels during menstrual cycle of woman, taking birth control pills, excessive or inadequate sleep, changes in patterns of sleep, physical stress, exercise, anxiety, stress, fasting, additional stress or stimulation on sense organs by bright lights, louder noises, odors, strong perfumes, etc.
Foods which may trigger a migraine
Usually, foods which may result in a sudden rise of Pitta or Kapha dosha is responsible for migraine attacks. Dairy foods, chocolates, baked foods, heavy to digest foods, peanuts, onions, fermented foods, processed food products, spicy foods contribute to being responsible for migraine pain. Hence, it is recommended to avoid these food products during migraine treatment.
Origin of migraine pain
Owing to causative factors, pitta dosha aids in obstructing the flow of Vata dosha in the brain that results in throbbing pain. If you are suffering from Suryavarta type of a headache, pitta dosha is dominant during the afternoon which results in a severe headache in the afternoon. The pain gradually reduces during dusk.
Symptoms of a migraine
Generally, migraines are initiated by visual disturbances or aura. This disturbance may be blurred vision, blind spot before the eyes, zigzag lights, viewing bright light, etc. Some of the pre-migraine signs are inclusive of mild confusion, yawning, vomiting sensation, to name a few.
Nature of migraine pain
If you are suffering from migraine pain, you may get a severe headache over the eyebrows. A headache worsens with the exposure to sunshine. You may also experience throbbing pain during a migraine. Pulsating pain also results from a migraine which enhances with every pulse. A migraine also results in a headache in one or two sides which lasts for few hours. The pain may last even for 2 to 3 days in worst cases. Pain may be radiated to the neck and shoulder of the same side.
