The education system has often been criticized due to its paucity in letting students think on their own and encouraging the process of rote learning. In the year 2021, this system is about to flip with the revolution of a new wave of learning. What is a discipline? An academic discipline is the imparted unit of information or knowledge at a school, college or university. Examples – Sociology, mathematics, philosophy and so on What is the multidisciplinary approach? Now, as the word suggests, ‘multi’ indicates to multiple or more than two and we just discussed what discipline is, multidisciplinary method deals with perusing a subject from the perspective of more than one discipline. This profile building approach allows for two or more interrelated topics from more than two subjects to be taught to the pupils without the forced need to create one particular standpoint. The creation of knowledge is dominated by the boundaries that a sole discipline generates but multidisciplinary let the youth’s mind flow. This method of education is fundamentally a technique to combine critical thinking and creativity in students. This system has been adapted in universities outside of India since a long time. But India took a big step last year towards a holistic system of learning. What is the National Education Policy 2020? The NEP 2020 approved by the union cabinet on 29th July, 2020 marked the history of Indian education by substituting the earlier policy of 1986. The policy’s purpose is to alter the structure of learning in India by the year 2021. The changed structure, groups secondary school students together that is from standards IX to XII. This stage will be coached to learn under the multi-disciplinary mode. It prepares the pupil for higher education with multiple options of subjects to gain interest. The purpose of this strategy towards higher education is to give the students an all-roundedness towards vocational training and professional expertise to improve their skills to satisfy the future careers they pursue. How does this method benefit students? Multidisciplinary learning does not limit the student’s job spheres and prepares the fellow for a range of uncommon occupations in their working life. Learners’ verbal and written communication abilities are advanced. As in the case of India, students would be studying at school in their regional languages or mother tongues thus preserving culture as well as glorifying the rich culture of India. Multidisciplinary learning will allow eradication of the rat race in the same subjects and encourage to broaden the child’s knowledge base. Considering that Artificial Intelligence will take over most of human kind’s activities, jobs of the future will be dependent on an individual’s exceptional perspectives and solutions during crisis. There are certain advantages of multidisciplinary learning: • Better problem-solving and critical thinking skillsrn• Helps individuals to connect academics and practical skills at the same timern• Equal emphasis given to both vocational and professional skillsrn• Better Time Management and Self-Managementrn• Flexibility to work in different environments and through different complications Whereas interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary means of knowledge construction are also not dependent on the traditional methods of disciplinarity and functions well for unique skill development, multidisciplinary methods are more suitable for a diverse country like India.
