If you suffer with allergies, you may have struggled with finding an allergy medication that works. Loratadine is an allergy medicine that fights the uncomfortable, annoying symptoms of allergies and comes under a number of brand names. It temporarily relieves sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, itchy nose and itchy throat and is also used to treat the symptoms of itching and redness that come with hives. While Loratadine is used to fight the symptoms of allergies and hives, it does not prevent hives or other reactions of the skin caused by an allergy of some sort. Loratadine is the Big Kahuna in the class of medicines known as “antihistamines,” which work by blocking the action of histamine, the substance in the human body that causes those annoying, irritating allergic symptoms named above. Loratadine: The Basics If you suffer with allergy symptoms, you should know the facts about this medication. Then, you can ask your doctor his/her opinion as you may be a good candidate for it. You should always consult your physician before starting any medication, even those that are sold over the counter, because there may be contra-indications with other medications you’re already taking. Loratadine comes in various forms including a liquid, an immediate and extended release tablet, and a dissolving tablet taken by mouth. Tablets are usually taken just once per day (with or without food), and it’s imperative that you not take more or less than the indicated amount. Taking more Loratadine than you should could result in drowsiness, irritability or more serious symptoms. Before Taking Medication for Allergies… There are some precautions you should follow before taking this medication. You should tell your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have to medications. Check the package label of the medication to make sure you are not allergies to any of its ingredients. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications you are taking and be sure to include OTC medications, herbs and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any past kidney or liver disease or any history of asthma. If you are pregnant or breast feeding or planning to become pregnant, you must tell your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it’s safe to take a medicine for allergies. If you have PKU, a condition in which a special diet is required, please tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication for allergies. If you and your doctor decide that Loratadine is right for you, your life can be so much better without suffering the daily agony of allergy symptoms. Finding an allergy medication that really works can change lives!
