Each tooth in a person’s mouth is composed of different layers that perform unique functions. The outermost layer of a tooth is called the enamel; the enamel protects the tooth from damage caused by various external factors. Unfortunately, this important layer is sometimes affected by genetics, making the layer produce fewer minerals than expected. When the enamel on a tooth’s surface is not strong enough, nothing prevents bacteria from penetrating and damaging the internal structure of the tooth. The interior components of a tooth are very sensitive to foreign particles. Teeth affected by these damaging factors usually suffer from fragility and exhibit an unpleasant appearance. One common cause of enamel deficiency is a condition called amelogenesis imperfecta. A person can acquire this condition from genetics, and an abnormal gene from one parent is all it takes for the condition to manifest. The disorder can cause a tooth or set of teeth to deform, weaken, and discolor. It affects the proteins that compose the enamel: amelogenin, tuftelin, ameloblastin, and enamelin. Although this dental problem cannot be cured, Colorado Springs cosmetic dentistry has found ways to at least remedy the dental imperfections it can bring. In Colorado Springs, Colorado, dentists perform a variety of procedures to improve the appearance of a person’s teeth. These procedures are helpful for people who suffer from the effects of enamel deficiency caused by amelogenesis imperfecta. Colorado Springs cosmetic dentistry offers procedures that can conceal the stains and deformities on the teeth of people suffering from amelogenesis imperfecta. To restore the appearance and functions of their patients’ teeth, dentists can perform surgical and non-surgical procedures such as dental implantation and the installation of crowns and bridges. The treatment for the condition usually depends on the severity of each case. Through Colorado Springs cosmetic dentistry, a person suffering from amelogenesis imperfecta can be fitted with artificial or prosthetic teeth. Despite their artificial nature, these restoration devices are undetectable, unless examined very closely. Devices such as stainless steel crowns can also be fitted on the teeth of children suffering from amelogenesis imperfecta, to prevent the bothersome effects of tooth hypersensitivity.
