Referred to as the building blocks of protein, amino acids play a key role in all of our body’s functions. Most adults, because of poor food choices and poor absorption from the small intestine, do not have the amount of amino acids that are needed for optimal health.
There are two types of amino acids: essential amino acids and nonessential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be manufactured in the body (you get them by eating foods that contain protein) and nonessential amino acids are manufactured within the body by combining two or more essential amino acids.
Amino acids are vital in our bodies’ absorption of vitamins and minerals. Amino acid deficiencies have been linked to allergies, autoimmune disorders, depression, and neurological problems. When you fully activate your level of protein absorption your entire body gets an energy makeover. Amino acids support digestion and bowel function, boost energy levels and promote better joint and muscle function.
The challenge we face is that adequate amounts of dietary protein are needed for our bodies to form all 22 amino acids. Because most people eat large amounts of processed foods, millions of us are missing out on quality protein and could benefit from some level of amino acid supplementation. Amino acid supplements can be extremely helpful, but it is important to do your homework before purchasing them.
Make sure you look for supplements with the following ingredients:
Acetyl L-Ca
ation: This anti-aging compound will enhance your immune function, stimulate antioxidant activity and slow mental aging.
N-Acetyl Cysteine: This powerhouse compound enhances the effectiveness of other antioxidants and helps the liver produce the MEGA-antioxidant glutathione.
L-Alanine: Your body relies heavily on this amino acid for protein synthesis.
L-Arginine: This plays a role in cell division, healing of wounds, ammonia removal, immune function and the release of hormones. It has also been shown to increase hGH production, improve exercise performance and promote heart health.
L-Aspartic Acid: Because aspartic acid increases stamina, many people find it very helpful in fighting fatigue.
L-Glutamine: This amino can pass through the blood-brain barrier and is regarded as the “ultimate brain food.”
Make sure you choose supplements with free form, single chain amino acids that require no digestion so your body can use them immediately. Look for a doctor-designed formula designed to correct the state of your protein deficiency, stimulate digestion, rebuild your enzymes, increase your stomach acid and thus increase the nutrient stream to all of your major organs and cell functions. Talk to your holistic practitioner about the amino acid supplement that is best for you and make a New Year’s resolution to give your body the building blocks it needs for peak performance.
