Discover the Secrets of a Longer, Happier Life

At this time of year, I can’t help but think of old Ebenezer Scrooge. He spent his life an unhappy man, until the holiday spirits showed him the error of his ways.

Of course, real life isn’t as simple as a Charles Dickens novel. But happiness can be as elusive for real people as it was for Scrooge. Fortunately you can easily boost your happiness using some simple strategies.

But before I go into how to increase your happiness, here’s why being happy matters.

Happiness is linked to success. And when I say “success,” I don’t just mean material wealth. Happy people have better marriages… stronger friendships… better work performance… and – often – higher incomes.1

Happy people also tend to be healthier than unhappy people2… and healthy, happy people tend to live longer, too. In fact, one study found that happiness has the same effect on longevity as not smoking.3

So feeling good is definitely good for you.

But how do you increase happiness? Well, you don’t have to be as rich as Midas – or even the guy down the street – to be happy. Money really doesn’t buy happiness.

Take, for example, a 10-year study from the University of Texas. In looking at 274 married adults, they found that a boost in income resulted in a small, short-term rise in happiness. But the higher the income, the less impact increases had.

On the other hand, family social support had a huge impact on their subjects. The closer people were to their families, the happier they were.4 In other words, Dickens was right… Mending the rift with his nephew, Fred, was the smartest thing Scrooge could have done.

And remember how bitter Scrooge was about life? He saw all the negatives. Not surprisingly, a recent study in Personality and Individual Differences lists this as the perfect formula for unhappiness. These researchers found the happiest people are those who focus on the positives.5

Wearing rose-colored glasses may be unrealistic. But developing a “glass-half-full” point of view can pay big dividends.

Of course, Scrooge was all about money. And as we’ve seen, income is no predictor of happiness. But there is one way money can make you happier…

Spend it on others.

After his visitors, Scrooge became as generous as he’d been tight. And, once again, Dickens hit the nail on the head.

In 2008, psychologists at the University of British Columbia tested spending as a key to happiness. They found that people were consistently happier when they spent their money on others instead of themselves.5

So far, Scrooge’s transformation has been a textbook blueprint for creating happiness. And Dickens had the old man do one more thing to make sure it stuck.

Remember when Scrooge vowed to keep the holiday spirit in his heart all year round? That was a tall order. After all, he’d just wished a stake of holly through the hearts of everyone who observed the spirit for a single day.

But it was a smart move, because a brand-new study shows that people who set their goals higher tend to be happier. Even if they don’t always attain them.6

These strategies may seem almost too easy. And maybe even a little corny. (After all, Dickens wrote his story in 1843.) But the research shows they work. And your payoff could be enjoying more – and more fulfilling – years.

Yours in continued good health,

Movement is one of the most honest forms of self-connection. The body never lies. It holds stress, records emotion, and reveals when something feels off. True healing often begins in the slow, intentional kind, the kind that lets the body lead and the mind follow.rnThat’s where precision-based training, such as re
