What are cable assemblies?

Cables come in standard lengths and types which are not suitable for all applications. Whether you require a cable for home, business or commercial product, bespoke cable assemblies can offer an effective solution to many cabling requirements.

Cable assemblies are a bespoke collection of a number of wires which are cut to length and bound together with straps, cable ties, cable lacing, sleeves, electrical tape, a weave of string or a combination of these. Cable assemblies are used in vehicles, construction machinery and in buildings when large numbers of wires need running from one place to another.

Why use a cable assembly?

There are many advantages to cable assemblies. A cable assembly, sometimes called a cable or wire harness, will allow for stronger securing of cables. This is particularly useful near moving parts, such as inside machinery, because they reduce the chance of wires becoming loose and causing damage. They are also easier and quicker to connect and secure than numerous loose wires, allowing for a time-effective installation of wiring throughout vehicles, machinery and buildings. Numerous cables bound together also allow for optimisation of space in small areas, preventing the need for cables to be boxed in when the cable assembly can simply be attached to a surface or wall.

Cable assemblies are much safer than numerous loose cables for a number of reasons. The neatness of a cable assembly prevents the degree of loose wiring, reducing the likelihood of a wire coming loose and causing damage. In addition to this, they reduce the chance of loose wiring causing a short, and a reduction in cables being damaged through vibrations caused by machinery. The binding connecting cables in a cable assembly can be specified to be flame resistant, thus reducing the chance or an electrical fire or the damage caused to the cables by a fire. An increasing number of cable assemblies are not only being used in technical equipment, but in buildings too, and one of the reasons for this is the increased safety which they provide. A reduction in the number of loose trailing wires leads to fewer accidents in a workplace, thus protecting staff from injury and preventing possible future sick days and compensation payments.
