Many individuals feel that the lessons learned from their mothers and fathers and their teachers are the keys to flourishing in life. People learn how to think in particular ways and told these ideas will aid them in succeeding. In the book, “The Maverick Mindset” by Dr. John Eliot who is a famous guru in self-improvement and leadership professional challenges those ideas and uses instances from the life of the most successful individuals to prove his points. rnMost people can look at Tiger Woods and Ted Williams and declare that they have amazing talents to concentrate and block out things other than what is presently occurring, and very few individuals can say they know how to accomplish this. “The Maverick Mindset” uses these incredibly successful people and clearly explains how they gain such focus. Better yet, it is also presented in a business mindset that most people can use. rnDr. John Eliot talks about the top achievers and makes connections between what they do how they think and what they have accomplished. His book talks about what top achievers have in common and that is the refusal to accept “common wisdom” even though that is what they may have been taught. Rather he makes the point that each of them has gone down their own path and sometimes even flown in the face of accepted wisdom. rnEven though a businessperson can be very experienced in his or her industry and knowledgeable, the book, “Maverick Mindset” makes the point that being qualified does not exactly assure success. However, one should know their business from top to bottom and have the education or the expertise to do the work, the other side of it is the mindset of the individual. Obtaining results using old school methods might not be possible. rnDr. John Eliot talks about how the most successful people in business refused to take the common path, and refused to accept “you can’t do that.” Even though a businessperson may not have a dream of being a pro golfer, he can take the things he has learned from very successful sports stars and use the principles in his business to concentrate on what is important. rnThe book “The Maverick Mindset” describes both the similarities in successful businesspeople like CEOs of leading companies and what characteristics they share and that are different in nature. Dr. Eliot believes that this can be learned to help in becoming successful in business and in life overall. rnSuccess in a selected field is not always the direct outcome of cautious planning, refusal to take leaps of faith or following a set game plan, not for most successful businesspeople. Rather they share a knack to know when they should take risks, when plans may not work out, are not needed or are too inconvenient and when setting goals may interfere with the goal itself. For some people this comes naturally, but it appears as if others are able to learn it is what Dr. Eliot says.

While I was waiting for my dance class to start, I watched an instructor patiently coach a couple through what was obviously one of their first lessons. The instructor was having them do a “box step,” which is what it sounds like. A “box” made with your feet. It consists of two parts, a forward half box and a backward half box. Each half box has three steps: a step forward or backward, a step to the side, and a step to close the feet together. The instructor was counting out
