Overview Threading Hair epilation originated in India and is a very old way to remove unwanted body hair with help of thin cotton thread. This technique is more and more becoming popular in Europe. It's a widely used hair removal technique with Arab women. It is also very popular in Persia. The Persian name for it is: Bande Abru (which means translated: Threaded Eyes). Threading the entire facial area is nowadays much used by Iranians. But traditionally it was only used as a beauty treatment for women who were preparing to get married or as a beauty treatment for other festive occasions. In Persia, threading was a traditional indicator that a girl had reached adulthood and that she was ready for marriage. How is it used? Practitioners use thin and twisted thread made of pure cotton. This thread is being rolled over untidy hairy areas and moustaches. The thread pulls out any hairs at their roots. With tweezers they are plucked out only individually. Threading on the other hand can remove single rows of hair in one go. This technique can give you a much straighter line. It can become a quite painful experience if the area of the removed hair is a large one. Threading can easily cause dermal irritations. If done professionally, upper layers of skin are not affected. If done properly, it could be the perfect way of epilation for people who have sensitive skin or who use medication like Retin-A or similar acne products. A less common threading method in Europe for removing hair at the root is the Arabic technique: KHITE, used primarily on facial hair. With Khite, rows of facial hair are yanked out at once with a thin cotton thread. Historic Background The historic origin of threading is not clear. Some claim this form of epilation has its origins in Turkey. Threading hair is very common to women in the Middle East and India. Traditionally, threading is used to remove hair on the entire face. That includes areas like the upper lip, eyebrows, chin, cheeks and even sideburns. Threading is becoming a very popular form of epilation in Europe. Threading is known to remove the entire structure of each hair. This procedure lasts up to 6-7 weeks. How does it Work? A thin cotton thread is run over a hair while the thread it being twisted. The thread traps around the hair like a miniature lasso, and it lifts the unwanted hair out of the follicle. Temporary threading results can become permanent. Regular threading damages the hair follicles. This will stop the damaged hair from growing back. The Cons: If threading is not performed in a proper way, the hair follicles can be damaged. After the treatment, hair can grow back much quicker. It might be difficult to find some experienced professional. It's a true art form and isn't a trade you can quickly learn in a couple of classes. Especially if it comes to eyebrow threading. Unless you reside in a big city, you will have problems finding an expert who is able to do threading. It is mostly only used on the face. The discomfort of threading can be painful.
