Resolving to get control of your anger by learning a few anger management techniques is a great way to start off the summer. Lashing out at others when you are feeling most hurt and vulnerable is not uncommon but it can cause lasting damage to relationships both at home and at work.

Anger itself is not unnatural, unhealthy or sinful. How we deal with the emotion is what counts. Uncontrolled anger can undermine relationships and cause both physical and psychological problems.

Here are some anger management techniques that have worked for others.

Try not to react right away. Take a walk around the block and try to calm down so that you have time to think before you react.

Venting to a neutral, trusted friend before you respond to the person or situation making you angry can help you gain perspective and calm down.

Another good way to reduce stress and blow off some steam is to get physical exercise before you respond to the upsetting situation.

Finally, it’s not uncommon that our anger in a particular situation with a loved one may be a disguise for a more fundamental problem in the relationship. Try analyzing the issue to find what it may be representing to really get to the heart of the problem. This won’t be easy but it’s the most long-lasting, effective anger management technique you can employ. If you struggle with this you might want to look into marriage counseling.

Obviously successful anger management doesn’t come ove
ight; repeated and persistent practice is key.

To reiterate an important point, these anger management techniques do not mean that you will not get angry. Anger management simply helps you learn more effective ways to deal with that anger so that it doesn’t become destructive and harm your relationships.

Starting off the summer with the goal of controlling your anger is doable; these and other anger management techniques can help.
