Anger Management Techniques: The "I Feel Pretty" Technique

Most anger management techniques don’t work. Why is that?
Well, to be effective an anger management technique must be able to change your emotional state and change it rapidly. That’s not always easily done as your brain may be barreling down a one way track at full speed making it hard for you to just stop and change tracks.
Most importantly, however, an anger management technique needs to change your state, both physical and emotional, from agitation into a different place.
The trick is to catch yourself when you are just starting to get riled up, maybe somewhere around a 4 if you are rating your anger on a ten point scale.
This means that is very important for you to check in with how stressed or angry you are feeling several times a day. Pay attention to the warning signs. Do your shoulders tense up? Do you get a headache? Do you feel a tightness in your chest. Your body will always give you the warning signs of an anger episode. Get to know what your warning signs are and tune into them.
In just a moment (if you haven’t already skipped ahead and watched it), I am going to give you a link to a clip from the movie “Anger Management” that is a great illustration of an effective anger management technique because
a) its very funny which will alter your state of mind and;
b) it shows how powerful doing something thats both distracting and ridiculous can quiet you down in just two minutes.
I’ve got scads of other anger management techniques that I teach in my anger management class that you should check out but for now, sit back, relax and enjoy one one of the greatest anger management techniques I've ever seen: "I feel Pretty". To access this video go to YouTube and do a search for Anger Management I Feel Pretty.
Makes you feel better just watching it doesn't it? Now thats a great anger management technique!
So next time you are getting mad, try the "I Feel Pretty" anger management technique (just sing it to yourself in your head and think of Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson on the bridge). You might think I'm crazy, but try it. It works.
