Ever since its inception in 1974 the Volkswagen Golf has been collecting awards every year, this year it has, for the fifth consecutive time been awarded What Car?’s “Small Family Car 2011” award. The Golf manufacturer Volkswagen also claimed the highly prestigious Security Award, which is awarded in partnership with Thatcham, the Motor Industry Repair Research Centre. The exact model to win the small family car award was the Golf Match 1.4 litre TSI, five door with 122PS. What Car?’s editor in chief, Steve Fowler said, "Volkswagen's Golf is all the car most people will ever need - it has an unbeatable combination of quality, space, fun and frugality that keeps it ahead of ever-improving rivals." While deciding on the winner of the Security Award, Thatcham experts have to examine thousands of models, testing every element of a car's security, including break-in tests to see how long it would keep a determined thief at bay. The Golf has been like the back bone for VW Scotland, since its introduction many other models have come and gone but the Golf still stands proud, even amongst new competition. The high performance Golf models such as the GTi, VR6 and R32 have already gone down in the history books as one of the fastest and best hot hatches ever produced. Accepting the awards, Chris Craft, Director of Volkswagen UK said: "I'm very proud of these awards and delighted to see Volkswagen performing well tonight. The Golf is our biggest selling model and it's tremendous that on top of a raft of other accolades - which have included World Car of the Year and three fleet car of the year awards - the mainstay of our brand has retained its What Car? title for the fifth consecutive year."
