Despite the fact that the one of highest Beyer Speed Figure of 113 recorded for the season’s older male category comes from the Whisper Hill Farm bred, Tiznow-Bethany colt, Tizway; my introspect regarding the finalists nominated for the Older Male Category tend to favour Game On Dude. Acclamation would be my second choice while Tiznow’s high beyer speed figure seems to fade out when countered by limited starts for the season and the lack of any Triple Crown or Breeder’s start.

In this clash of the titans, sadly Drosselmeyer washed out.

Despite being the Breeder’s Cup Classic winner, Drosselmeyer failed to hit the finalists’ listing for Champion Older Horse. Pretty disappointing. Since earlier starts play almost no role this season, Tizway is left with a handful of only four starts to gauge his contention for the Eclipse. He may have skilfully finished in the money in all four, won both the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational and Metropolitan Handicap and placed third in Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap and second in Grade 3 Charles Town Classic Stakes. His only start against my favoured Game on Dude was the Charles Town where he finished third behind his fellow finalist. Tizway’s remaining year following the Whitney was infested with illnesses soon after which he was shelved to stand stud. Will luck favour his 113 Beyer?

Unusual Heat-Winning in Style by Silveyville produced Acclamation who took over the turf as if he were bred for it. His equal command over main tracks make him the obvious choice for the top three Eclipse finalists. Of his 7 starts as a 5 year old, he won 5. Winning two Grade 1 stakes at Del Mar, the Eddie Read Stakes and the Pacific Classic Stakes. Along with these, the other three graded stakes wins at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita in Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, Jim Murray Handicap and the Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap comprise of a winning streak of 5 races following his two disappointing starts in 2011. His latter four wins recorded a consistent 3 figure Beyer Speed. Acclamation will race in 2012 as well, trainer Donald Warren suggested but Eclipse?

And here comes my favourite, the Bob Baffert champ, Game On Dude, an Adena Springs colt. His 2011 campaign comprises of only 3 wins out of 8 starts but 7 were in the money. Following two winning accomplishments at the Santa Anita Park early during the year, Game On Dude finished second and third respectively in two Grade 3 stakes, the Charles Town Classic Stakes and the Lone Star Park Handicap of which he defeated his fellow finalist Tizway in the former by a head. He then lost the winner’s photo finish at Hollywood Park’s Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap finishing second to First Dude and then lost the top three places at Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar. However, he avenged the disappointment soon after in Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita winning it 102 Beyers. The most integral win that could play pivotal for his Eclipse, the Breeder’s Cup Classic second place finish behind Drosselmeyer, chasing him down at 102 Beyers again. You see why he is favoured?
