Can a home remedy treat bacterial vaginosis? The short answer is that a single remedy cannot do that effectively. However, a combination of home remedies for BV can be much more useful than medical intervention. At least, that is true in a lot of cases.
The biggest issue that many people have with trying home remedies is that they believe medical intervention to be safer and more reliable. There are several good reasons why that isn't always the case with BV. Most of them have to do with the problems associated with taking antibiotics. Those problems include:
Your body may become immune to the antibiotics' effects.
The antibiotics will destroy both good and bad bacteria in your body.
You may find that the antibiotics cause side effects that are as bad as the bacterial vaginosis symptoms themselves.
You see, the bad bacteria that create BV do have quite a negative impact on your body. They can cause bleeding, itchiness, cramping and assorted other problems. However, losing all of the good bacteria in your body will only leave it open to more attacks, which is a big part of why more and more women are saying no to antibiotic BV treatments.
Body Backup:
What you really need in order to treat BV is body backup. In simpler terms, you need to find natural remedies that treat your BV problems without creating more trouble. One example of that is apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar is slightly acidic. That means that soaking in a bath with a little bit of it can change the pH balance within your vagina. The vinegar is acidic enough to make your vagina uninviting to bad bacteria. Yet, if it is diluted enough in the bath water, the vinegar is mild enough not to kill any remaining healthy bacteria. Since many people already keep ACV in their home for cooking or other purposes, that makes it an ideal home remedy for BV.
Replace What Was Lost:
BV often causes bad bacteria to kill off good bacteria, such as lactobacillus. So, it's also important to replace what was lost. The best way to do that is to use probiotics, or live cultures of healthy bacteria. Yogurt is an easy source of probiotics to use.
Some women choose to just eat more yogurt. Others choose to apply it directly to the vagina using a tampon or other applicator. Either method is fine, but you should be careful because too much yogurt can be almost as bad as not enough yogurt in terms of restoring balance to your body.
Supplement Support:
So, can a home remedy treat bacterial vaginosis? Only if you use many remedies working together. One of the best ways to do that is to get a little supplement support. Look for an herbal supplement that contains natural pain relievers, such as white willow bark, as well as healthy vitamins and minerals. Supporting your body, rather than using antibiotics to kill off everything, can help to keep BV from coming back.
