The antioxidants are molecules capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. The body is equipped with natural antioxidant defense mechanisms, but the market also offers various supplements based on substances that promise to exert this action.

What are antioxidant supplements used for?

Antioxidants(such as Cellgevity) are proposed to fight the negative action of free radicals, very reactive molecules produced by the body's cells during metabolic reactions. The production of free radicals can also be the consequence of exposure to environmental factors such as cigarette smoke, sunlight, radiation, chemicals and various drugs. What characterizes them is the absence of one or more electrons, which they try to compensate by reacting with other molecules - such as DNA and other cellular components - by taking electrons from them. This phenomenon has been associated with aging and various diseases, including tumors, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cataracts and atherosclerosis.rnBy acting as a source of electrons, antioxidants can prevent free radicals from oxidizing cellular components. It also seems that in some cases they can repair the molecules damaged by oxidation, block the production of free radicals starting from toxic metals, stimulate the expression of genes involved in the body's antioxidant defenses and the endogenous production of antioxidants, protect DNA. from oxidation as a real shield and induce the programmed death of cancerous cells.

Warnings and possible contraindications

The body does not need just one specific antioxidant, but several different antioxidant molecules. It is therefore good not to rely on a single supplement to defend yourself from the harmful action of free radicals. We must not forget that not all the benefits attributed to taking antioxidant supplements are supported by valid scientific evidence, indeed, in most cases, there is insufficient data to certify their real effectiveness. The debate on the issue is still alive today, and, according to authoritative opinions, excessive consumption of these products could even be counterproductive. For this reason, before taking them it is always good to consult with your doctor.
