APA literature reviews simply refer to literature reviews done in the APA style. These literature reviews basically use APA academic writing style in making their citations, and that is the sole factor that sets them out as different in comparison to other literature reviews. Basically, a literature review is a body of literature constituted of other literatures in a summarized form. However, the distinct thing to keep in mind is that, this body of literature should have similar content with regard to topic or subject in order to be called literature reviews.
Literature reviews with ad hoc topics without any semblance in content cannot be termed as a literature review. The main aim or purpose of writing literature reviews is to amass a body of knowledge on a certain topic or subject with the aim to develop a certain theme, idea, concept, research question or highlight a certain problem. In research the literature reviews are used as lenses through which the research can be focused in a certain direction after repetitively using the literature to imply that there is a common theme, idea, concept or problem that they all seem to highlight. The literature reviews form the basis upon which the research questions and the general research is developed. Literature reviews may also be time confined, in which cases the author of the work reviews literature in a certain topic within specific period or time frame.
The literature reviews summarize and synthesize the wealth of knowledge gathered in a certain topic or field in order to use it as an insight development tool. Unlike research work, literature reviews do not present any new information, but rather present what is already known through time. The only inclusion that may be different could be an occasional slight inclusion of personal comments or thought and not anything new. The room to opine may be provided, however; this has to be limited. Literature reviews serve a great purpose within research papers because they are used to show the origin of the new insight that may have led to the development of the research ideas. Literature reviews are therefore, insightful tools for developing research.
The outline of literature reviews should be done in sequential time-line mode, whereby; the writer of the literature review starts off with material of the earliest known time when a certain topic, idea or subject was formed. However, this may not be applicable to all conditions, because at times starting of the earliest time may take too much time. Rather the literature review writer should start off from the point at which the body knowledge began shaping and forming the idea or question that s/he is to explore in the research. This is important in topics that may have a lot material spanning over years and volumes of text which cannot be contained in a single literature review. The sequential arrangement of the content of these literary pieces should show the insightful conception of the idea and finally show how the material led to the idea. As one writes a literature review it is essential to keep in mind that what is going is an analysis and summary of various sources of material, therefore; this should not be done as a mere narration, but as a narration coupled with synthesis in a manner that gives the review sense and direction.
