If you’re an Apple fantastic, you probably already know this, but Apple will open it’s stores one to two hours early on Friday to accommodate the throngs of people vying for the new iPad. Featuring a new retina display, the 5MP iSight camera, and 4G LTE, it’s an improvement, but does it wow? Interesting, Apple is calling the new iPad… wait for it… “The New iPad.” You can read Computer World’s FAQ article here. If you’re not an Apple fanatic, or if you’re already an iPad owner, then perhaps you’re wondering what all the hoopla is about? Well, you have arguably some of the greatest minds in the tech world working at Apple. So each new product is going to feature something cool and/or better than the previous iteration. That’s almost a given. The new iPad has a retina display which has 4 times the pixels than the iPad 2. That’s incredible. According to Apple, “The Retina display on the new, third-generation iPad makes everything look crisper and more lifelike. Text is razor sharp. Colors are more vibrant. Photos and videos are rich with detail. All thanks to the 3.1 million pixels powered by the new A5X chip. It’s the best mobile display ever.” The retina display is cool, no doubt about that, but the best part of the new iPad is the new 4G LTE. Previously, the iPad was hampered by slow connectivity, but now that all should change, and it’s a welcome change. With the tablet game heating up and Microsoft about drop the hammer with Windows 8, Apple needs to stay as far ahead of the pack as possible. According to Computer World, “Although Apple has exhausted its online supply available for delivery this week — the current wait time before shipping is two to three weeks in all markets — iPad orders can be placed for at-home or at-work delivery, or set for pick-up at a nearby Apple store. The company has not yet created a reservation system for iPad purchases similar to what it created last October during the iPhone 4S launch, but if supplies remain tight, it may turn to that process for in-store purchases of the new tablet.” I’ve actually seen a couple surveys regarding how significant this newest generation of iPad is and most people think the retina display will be the difference maker. I’m not sure. It’s like the difference between 720p and 1080p. Some people just don’t notice or care enough to pay more for a True HD television. I think that the new 4G LTE will make it a player for sure, and with the iBooks 2 really taking charge with the textbooks initiative, it’s definitely going to be a game-changer in the education sector. I’m not sure where Apple goes from here. I’m surprised to not see Siri integration. Of course the insides are going to be upgraded each year, that’s a given. The camera being upgraded, that’s expected too. The display is nice, but were can they go from here? One thing is for sure.
