Among the most uncomfortable things that could happen to your dog is for them to have dog hot spots. When that happens, there may be a lot of reasons and among them is that they have been unfortunately infested with parasites. The most common of these parasites are fleas. Some dogs may also have dog hot spots due to psychological reasons. These things happen when the dog gnaws and excessively licks on a particular area. That lethal combination creates the lesions which eventually become more inflamed with every lick and they may also develop some pus with excessive gnawing. Dogs do this activity because something is causing them to feel very uncomfortable. The best way to treat dog hot spots would be to bring your dog to the vet. The doctor would clean up the wounds and provide some topical creams to cease the ongoing infection. But if you are yet to do that, you can do a few important things on your own to help your dog with the wounds. First, you need to have the areas specifically identified so that you can shave the hair off the area surrounding it. That would make it easier for you to treat the lesions and make sure that the hair itself doesn't contribute to further infections. Once the area has been shaved off, make sure that you have your hands clean before you treat the dog hot spots. The next important thing to do would be to cleanse the wounds. You can do this using cool water, filtered if possible, and then use a gentle cleanser over the wounds. If you can find anything than alcohol, that'll be better so it wouldn't sting. When the area has been cleansed, you can apply some bandage over it to help prevent infections. In addition to this, a cold compress would be needed to be applied on it up to four times a day to help prevent any more itching and also to speed up the healing of the wounds. The reason why you should take your vet to the dog even after all of this is that they might need to prescribe some medications to speed up the healing process. Among the common medicines that would be prescribed are antibiotics and in facilitating them, you need to closely follow the frequency, dosage, and medication period. In addition to the antibiotics and meds for the dog hot spots' cause, your vet may also prescribe some topical creams. These would help aid in the recovery process of the wounds that have been opened up.
