What are dental implants

Dental implants are artificial structures made of titanium (biocompatible material that "binds" to the bone in a process called osseointegration), which are incorporated into the jawbone and that in a sense both in looks and function represent a replacement for the tooth root and the tooth in the mouth.

Why do we need dental implants?

rnLosing a tooth, most people would do not consider as a major problem, unless it is one of the front teeth, which would distort their appearance. However, if the lost tooth (or worse-more teeth) is not immediately replaced with implants, can lead to the following problems:
  • Movement of adjacent teeth - teeth because of the empty space that limit starting to tilt (inclined) in order to fill empty space, a phenomenon known as Godunov phenomenon.
  • Loss of jawbone – On place with missing tooth, in the jawbone begins its gradual decomposition process and consequently reduces the amount of dental ridge. In case of multiple teeth, the process may be more dramatic and the person to get an aged look.
  • Speaking trouble - The lack of one or more teeth may hinder speech, presence of noise, voice change and other problems that usually appear when wearing dentures (jaws). rnProblems with eating - Frequent problem also is inability to eat certain types of food, which in turn result in poor nutrition and poor quality of life.
rnEnd to by many as the most important is that the loss of teeth, especially in the visible region which strongly affects the layout, appearance, self-esteem, and social life of a man. Nowadays, especially among young people, the social aspect is not acceptable to see empty spaces between teeth when talking or laughing. Dental implants not only look but also feel much closer to natural teeth than any other alternative.

The implementation process

rnBriefly, the procedure of placing the implants is performed in the operating room, under local anesthesia, painless and takes about as much time as a tooth extraction. The procedure takes place in three stages: 1. Implant - setting the primary part of the implant in the bone; 2. Stationary, i.e. bonding with bone (osseointegration) the healing process, which lasts 2-3 months for the lower jaw and 4-6 months for the upper jaw.); 3. Setting enhancement - abutment upon which prepares the tooth crown.rnOf course, very important to the success and functionality of implants is the maintenance of good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist (2 times a year). rnIf properly set up, especially if proper care and good oral hygiene by the patient, as well as regular checkups, dental implants are lifelong solution for lost teeth!
