Thinning scissors are great to reduce hair without shortening it, but can they be used on ethnic hair? In theory, yes; however, the reality of the answer lies in various factors. Preference, style and application are all major factors when deciding on the answer to that question. The goal of thinning shears is to remove excess hair, thus giving it a lighter feel, without removing length. However, the method that it uses to remove the hair may not be suitable for ethnic hair types. Thinning shears cut the hair shafts to essentially split the hair apart. This may be fine for straight hair or even wavy hair, but it is not really ideal for curly hair. People with straight hair may not even like to use thinning shears on their hair. Thinning shears may result in a "shelving" effect, or it may cause split ends. These scissors are known to make hair uneven lengths. Thinning shears cause some hairs to be short, and others to be long. When you have hair that is all the same length and you cut them with thinning shears, the shears do not cut all the hairs. In reality, you may have one hair that is right next to another hair, but one of them is shorter than the other. Therefore, what you end up with is a mix of short hair layered on top of long hair. What does this mean for ethnic hair? If you have straight hair and desire a multi-shelved layer look, then thinning shears may be right for you. However, prolonged use of thinning shears can cause damage to your hair. Regardless, when thinning shears are used on very curly or ethnic hair, the result is frizz. It may not be frizzy at first, but when the hair grows out, the frizz will show. The reason for this is because those cut hairs do not get cut again during the next trim. In humid areas, the result can be worse. Another reason for frizz after using thinning shears is because the hairs are split apart. Plus, if the thinning shears are not good quality or they are dull, it may cause extensive damage. If your desired result for thinning Japanese scissors is for straight or "flowy" hair, you will have better results with other methods. Thinning scissors may cause more frizz, as well as more frustration for you. Alternatively, you can use regular scissors to thin hair; you just need to use the right technique.
