Are You a Giver or a Taker?
I’m sure you’ve read something I’ve written saying that it’s important to be able to give to yourself so that you can continue to give to others… and that continues to be true. However, giving to yourself is much different than taking (receiving) from someone else.
The cycle of abundance involves many twists and turns. Abundance coming and going from your life doesn’t have to simply mean you’re purchasing and amassing. It goes much further than that!
Sometimes we take for granted the ability to hop in the car and drive to the corner store when we run out of milk… this is abundance. Without thought, we drop a $20 bill in our kid’s gas tank… this is abundance. We often do these things without a second thought. We give of our time and talents when someone needs our assistance… this, too, is abundance. These things and many more, we take for granted.
Those who are on the receiving end are the takers – someone who is openly willing to receive someone’s graceful assistance or donation. Have they stopped to wonder if they were worthy? Probably not, but I’m sure they were grateful nonetheless.
A wise man once told me that I didn’t accept well. He informed me that I happened to be a great giver, but failed miserably when someone wanted to pay it forward, or take the giver role. My problem was that I wasn’t comfortable being on the receiving end, or being the taker!
Let me explain it like this… You know that warm-fuzzy feeling you get in your heart when you’ve given something to someone dear not expecting anything in return, but looking forward to the expression of surprise on their face? When you fail to be the receiver, you have failed to allow someone who loves you to experience that warm-fuzzy. I bet you hadn’t thought of it that way, have you?
You see, the Law of Abundance, the Law of Reciprocity, the Law of Karma, and a few other Universal Laws are in play here. By now, I’m sure you’re aware of what the Law of Abundance is as it’s been in the media for many years, and I have written quite a few blog posts regarding the subject. Despite seeing people more aware of how they treat others, I continue to be surprised at how some folks think they’re immune to immutable law when it conce
s themselves and their actions. Is it hogwash? Go ahead, test the theory, act in a manner that defies the Universal Laws. Make your own decision if following the spiritual laws are worthy of your time and/or energy.
So, are you the giver or the taker? You should be both!
