For those that hit the gym every single day, they know just how important it is to keep a fit and active body. However, what many fitness enthusiasts may not realize is that your physical regimen could be having an impact on your oral health. So while your body may be in great shape and you feel great on the inside, your teeth and gums could be suffering for which you should quickly visit dental clinic like Hall Cosmetic & Family Dentistry. Here are some tips and advice to help keep your teeth and mouth as healthy as possible, especially if you are someone that is always active. Drink Plenty Of Water One of the biggest concerns for active athletes is dehydration. To most, dehydration may just be the feeling of discomfort in your mouth if you are unable to produce enough saliva. However, that is most certainly not all that is happening when you are dehydrated. When you don’t have enough moisture in your mouth, your body isn’t doing an adequate job of flushing bacteria and other buildup that accumulates in-between teeth or on the surface area of your tongue. The longer that this happens, the greater of a risk there will be for infections to take place. This can then lead to a variety of different oral complications over a period of time. In order to make sure that you are staying hydrated enough, be sure that you drink plenty of water. This doesn’t just mean that you should chug water after a workout, but rather you’ll want to make sure that you sip on water throughout the day and also during your workout. The more that you can stay hydrated, the easier it’ll be for your mouth to create saliva and stay as healthy as possible. Don’t Only Rely On Sports Drinks For many athletes, the taste of water isn’t enough for them to feel rejuvenated or replenished. Therefore, they will then start to drink sports drinks instead. While sports drinks may be ideal for refueling your body with electrolytes, it’s not going to be good for your teeth. This is because these drinks are full of sugars and artificial colors, all of which can be horrendous for your oral health. The more that these sugars get into your mouth and stay there, the more likely it is that you’ll sustain damage to your teeth. Sports drinks can be fine occasionally, but they shouldn’t be the only thing that you are using to stay hydrated during a workout. Chew Gum Chewing on a sugarless gum during your workout will also be quite helpful. By chewing sugarless gum, your mouth will naturally produce saliva as you move your jaw. Therefore, you’ll have less of a risk for dehydration, and you’ll also be able to keep your mouth clean as well. Keep Up With Your Oral Maintenance Extreme athletes need to ensure that they are continually keeping up with their oral health. This includes brushing their teeth after a workout, and also being sure to floss as well. Athletes have a much greater concern for keeping their teeth healthy and clean, so keeping up with oral health will ensure that their teeth are in great shape. Furthermore, if an athlete will be traveling for their training, they should be sure to have a dental travel kit handy, just to make sure they don’t have any excuses for not brushing or flossing while on the go. Have A Routine Plan It can be a challenge if you continually are unprepared to take care of your teeth. Therefore, be sure that you have a routine plan for how and when you will be taking care of your oral health. If you forget your water bottle before you go to the gym, you may not stay hydrated. If you don’t have any gum, you may instead decide to chew on candy. Or if you don’t have a dental kit, then you may just avoid brushing your teeth all together. To avoid any of these problems from happening, plan ahead and you’ll be able to keep your teeth looking as great as your body.
