There are several reasons for irregular heart rhythms. Underlying systemic heart disease also exists, but not in all patients. In certain patients, systemic heart disease is simply due to irregular heart rhythm rather than vice versa. In other patients, conditions outside the heart itself are the source of irregular heart rhythm.
