Arrhythmia in pets is referred as the heartbeat that is either too rapid or too slow. Abnormal rhythms of the heart arise when there is an irregularity in the propagation or generation of electrical impulses in the heart. Not all arrhythmias are life-threatening, but it is necessary to track and determine their root cause.

What Are The Causes Of Arrhythmia In Pets?

There are several reasons for irregular heart rhythms. Underlying systemic heart disease also exists, but not in all patients. In certain patients, systemic heart disease is simply due to irregular heart rhythm rather than vice versa. It is necessary to assess this since the prognosis for these two different cases can be drastically different. In other patients, conditions outside the heart itself are the source of irregular heart rhythm. For instance, some spleen or brain conditions, stomach misplacement, and severe anemia are all possible causes of arrhythmias.

What Are the Signs of an Arrhythmia?

Pets with arrhythmias are relatively harmless and might not exhibit any external symptoms. In certain cases, however, arrhythmia can lead to heart disease, increases in blood pressure, and changes in blood supply to vital organs. Pets with these types of arrhythmias can have symptoms such as: • Weakness • Depressionrn• Coughing or difficulty breathingrn• Difficulty Exercisingrn• Fainting episodesrn• Pale gumsrn• Sudden death

Treatment of Cardiac Arrhythmias In Pets

Treatment depends on the kind and severity of heart arrhythmia and the root process of the condition. Each form of arrhythmia is treated accordingly. Others need medicine, while some are benign and do not need treatment. In addition to the management of arrhythmia, any underlying heart disorder or other disease should be treated.

Home Care and Prevention Of Arrhythmias In Pets

There is no home treatment for irregular heart conditions in pets, except that you can take any medicine recommended by your veterinarian. If you think your pet has an erratic heart rate or rhythm, you can contact your veterinarian immediately. Cardiac arrhythmias are difficult to avoid, but early diagnosis and treatment of predisposing causes can reduce the risk of getting arrhythmias.
