Asthma Meds - Why Being Reckless With Asthma Control Could Seriously Harm You
Do you feel you have you're asthma under control.
Asthma meds (asthma medications) are regarded as the guardian angels of sufferers world wide however, if you are using your rescue medications on a frequent basis, then you may not have your condition under control.
So what is a frequent basis...once, twice or more a week?
In this article, the emphasis is on controlling your asthma and if you are reckless, even the use of asthma meds may not save your life in an emergency.
Controlling your asthma symptoms is a combination of working a plan and commonsense. By working a plan, you should have already sat down with your doctor and firstly determined the level of symptoms you are experiencing and the triggers most commonly associated with your attacks.
The use of asthma meds should be seen as a safety net to avoid major complications. In the US alone, more than half a million people are hospitalized each year through severe asthma attacks and the statistics show that more than 4000 deaths are caused by asthma.
Asthma meds provide a virtual lifeline for sufferers but while they are there as a safety net, the incidence of attack can be lessened significantly by following your control plan to the letter.
Is Your Asthma Under Control?
There is a simple process asthma sufferers can take to determine if they have their condition under control. Here are four signs which will indicate it is not:
1. You experience symptoms twice or more a week
2. You use your asthma meds such as a rescue inhaler twice or more each week
3. You don't sleep very well and are woken by your asthma symptoms
4. Your lifestyle is interfered with by your asthma symptoms such as work, play and for children, schooling
If any of the above signs are present in your life at the moment then the chances are you don't have control. Two or more would indicate some serious assessments need to be made and the obvious solution is to go and see your doctor.
Using asthma meds can perhaps give sufferers a false sense of security and while they are extremely useful, be careful not to assume you can deviate from your plan of avoiding known triggers simply because you are guarded by your medications.
In other words, avoid being reckless.
