When you are out on the field scoring points for your team and everyone in the crowd is chanting your name, it is not likely that you will be thinking about how important your oral health is or what do do with tooth pain. However, one of the main concerns that many athletes should keep in mind is how well their dental health is and what they should do in order to fix anything that may be a problem. Unlike most average people, athletes at all levels need to consider the fact that their oral health is at much greater risk. This is due to a variety of factors, especially considering the amount of physical exertion that they put rninto their daily workouts.rnThough it may not be one of the first things that comes to their mind, here are 5 concerns that athletes should be aware of in order to keep their teeth and gums in the best shape possible. Saliva Production Is Limited By Dehydration Athletes who are always working out and training need to worry about keeping their body hydrated. However, for those that do not, then it is likely that they will notice that they have symptoms and other issues that are associated with dry mouth. Having dry mouth, or halitosis, is more than just something that is uncomfortable. Instead, it is also quite bad for your oral health. Your body needs a certain level of saliva production in order to naturally flush out bacteria that is building up in your gums and in-between teeth. When you are consistently active and your body is dehydrated, then it is much less likely that your body will be able to naturally do this. However, what becomes even more concerning for some athletes is when they reach for their favorite sports drink. Although these drinks may be more tasty than just water, the truth is that the are filled with artificial flavors that can lead to further damage in a dry mouth. Instead, athletes should be consistently drinking water throughout the day, as well as while they are working out. By drinking water consistently, they will be able to keep their body hydrated when it needs it most. Difficulties Maintaining Oral Health While On The Road For athletes that are always traveling, it can be very difficult for them to maintain any sort of dental routine. They never know when they will be checking into their hotel, they might have team meetings at inconvenient hours, or they might just be so exhausted that they want to go to sleep without brushing their teeth. However, it is vital that athletes make sure that they take care of their teeth while traveling. In order to keep things more organized, athletes should keep a travel dental kit with them, which can include a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, and other tools that will be useful for keeping up with their oral health. rnAthletic Performance Leads To Greater Risks Of Oral Damage When playing an active and physical sport, athletes run the risk of sustaining physical damage to their teeth. Accidents happen all of the time and when players are going at it with their all, there is no telling what could happen to their teeth. In order to limit the amount of possible damage that could occur, athletes should be sure to wear a mouthguard and other types of oral protection to keep their teeth in great shape. An Improper Diet Can Wreak Havoc On Teeth And GumsrnAthletes also need to take the time to maintain their diet while on the road as well. It might be much easier for them to snack on some treats or sweets while on an airplane or traveling in a bus, but this should be avoided. Instead, athletes should rely on fresh vegetables to keep their teeth clean. Not only will this help to keep saliva production flowing in their mouth, but it will also keep their body in great shape for when they are on the field. Limited Time To Schedule Routine Dental VisitsrnFinally, athletes need to make sure that they are taking the time to schedule routine dental visits as well. If this is impossible to do because of a travel schedule during the season, athletes should take the time right before, and immediately after, they plan to by physically active. The dentist can take the time to look at your teeth and gums and determine if any work is needed for your physical lifestyle.
