You may have seen it on the news, or witnessed it first hand – this winter has seen many drivers caught out by the snow and ice. Some drivers have even abandoned their cars because the cars were unable to cope with the conditions. In the snow and ice traction and grip become very limited, this is where 4x4 vehicles come to their own.rnTraditional cars have two driven wheels, either front wheels or the rear; these are referred to as two wheel drive models. Four wheel drive models, sometimes referred to as all wheel drive have power delivered to all four wheels, so if one particular wheel gets stuck the other ones will still propel the car. An Audi dealer in Southampton says it has had many customers who have come in for a regular service of late and complimented the four wheel drive on their Audi. Most modern 4x4s come with an electronically control diff, which regulates the amount of power going to each wheel, it measures the amount of grip and road conditions to decide which wheel is best suited to provide grip and how much power it can tolerate without losing grip. You may have seen a few hatchback and saloon models of Audis easily tackling the icy conditions, this is because they are probably fitted with Audi’s Quattro system which is a permanent four wheel drive system. There are over 235,000 Quattro driven Audis in the UK at the moment, the system itself has been around for 30 years. Director of Audi UK - Jeremy Hicks, emphasised the accessibility and value of four wheel drive in the Audi range: "Audi offers quattro right from the A3 upwards, so it isn't necessary to make the jump to an SUV to enjoy the feeling of reassurance in tricky conditions that only four-wheel-drive can truly bring. In the UK some form of precipitation falls on at least half of the days in each year on average, so although our trademark technology really comes into its own in the current extreme conditions, its benefits are considerably longer lasting."
