The problem of erectile dysfunction or weak erection can disrupt the sexual life of men and strain the relationship of a couple. Sexual fulfillment is an important aspect of marriage and unless the man is able to get a hard penile during sexual intercourse, neither he nor his partner will be satisfied. This is a common problem for those who suffer from erectile dysfunction. A man is believed to be suffering from this condition if he is unable to get any erection at all during the foreplay or at the time of intercourse. As a result, his organ remains flaccid and he is unable to penetrate his partner. At other times, a man suffering from erectile dysfunction does manage to get his penis hard but is unable to sustain the erection long enough to make his partner hit orgasm. In both the above mentioned scenarios, the man is incapable of enjoying a fulfilling sex life. In addition to that, he often feels embarrassed to let down his partner and this more often than not shatters his confidence and lowers his self esteem. This is because in most cultures the ability to maintain erection for a longer period of time is associated with masculine strength and greater sexual potency. As a result, men with erectile dysfunction are perceived as having lesser masculinity and are often labeled as impotent. Though this is far from truth, the humiliation associated with the inability to get an erection or to sustain it on a consistent basis makes men desperate to treat it for once and all. The physical and psychological manifestations associated with this condition makes a man suffering from it try almost each and every treatment for the same available in the market. However, before discussing some effective Ayurvedic remedies for this disorder, it would help to learn more about it. Ayurveda defines erectile dysfunction as ‘Sankalpapravano nityam priyaam vashyaamapi sthreeyam’. This means that even though a man has a strong urge to have gratifying sex with his partner, he is unable to do so because of the looseness of his phallus. Moreover, trying too hard to get an erection often leads to excessive tiredness and sweating that eventually takes the pleasure out of the act. So in the end, both the man and his partner become frustrated due to lack of sexual fulfillment. Causes of Erectile Dysfunction Ayurveda notes that the reasons for erectile dysfunction are more or less same as that for low libido. Some of the most common causes are listed below: Stress is one of the most common reasons for a limp phallus or inconsistent performance when it comes to penile erection. The link being that under high stress situations, brain takes up most of the blood circulation, leaving insufficient blood to travel to the genital area. The lack of blood in the spongy tissues of the corpus cavernosa results in erectile dysfunction. Ayurveda summarizes this as lack of erection due to shok (grief), chinta (tension), bhay (fear) and traasad (terror). In the same way, men may find it difficult to get or sustain an erection after having a heavy meal as all the blood circulation is directed towards the digestive system. Moreover, a heavy meal also lowers the libido in men and makes them uninterested in performing a sexual act thus impacting their erection as well. Often times, men suffering from diabetes mellitus face the problem of erectile dysfunction as well. In such a case, this condition can be treated only by curing the symptoms of diabetes. Recent studies have also established a direct link between smoking and high intake of alcohol to hammering of carnal instincts and the resultant inability to get an erection. In many cases, men who have undergone a surgical procedure in their groin area or take prescription medicines for depression and chronic pain also show symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Recommended treatment for Erectile Dysfunction in Ayurveda Ayurveda emphasizes on the treatment of tridoshas – vata dosha, pitta dosha and kapha dosha to cure the problem of erectile dysfunction. This condition can be easily treated in Ayurveda by following the ‘vaajikarana therapy’. This therapy helps a man feel happier and stronger and thus aids in increasing his potency and duration of erection. Adding a little ghee in the diet and practicing yoga and meditation can also prove extremely helpful in treating this condition. Massaging the penis with herbal oils comprising of bala, ashvagandha, taila and rose oils also helps in getting and sustaining erection till the completion of the sexual act.
