Treating Spondylosis through Ayurveda
Spondylosis is a general term referring to the degeneration of the spine. The most common causes of this ailment are age-related factors and spinal osteoarthritis. The vertebral bodies get affected by the degenerative process. The symptoms will include one or more of the following:
-
Lack of coordination while moving around.
-
Numbness in the legs.
-
Walking movement remains affected.
-
The leg is becoming weak.
-
You get a tingling sensation in the feet.
-
Bowel control is not proper.
The vitiation of air and ether (Vata Dosha) causes the problem according to Ayurveda. The condition is Griva Sandhigata Vata. Degeneration of the body tissues occurs when the dosha gets aggravated. The cushioning fluid in the joints become less because the dosha has a cold and drying quality. Kapha dosha governs the connective tissues between the joints. Kapha dosha is the humor linked to Earth and Water. If left without treatment, it leads to disc degeneration and spondylosis.
The treatment for spondylosis is to pacify the aggravated vata and kindle the digestive fire. Following this, the patient gets herbal medicines that stimulate the growth of tissues. At times, the patient also has Panchakarma massages that help in the rejuvenation process. A medicated oil bath helps relieve pain and inflammation in the ligaments and tissues. It improves the flexibility of the joints.

One may include other Ayurvedic therapies such as Abhyanga swedam and Navara kizhi depending on the severity of the ailment. Abhyanga swedam is a massage with warm oil. Navara kizhi is a massage treatment for inducing sweat. It re-energizes the body and improves the muscle strength. The material used is milk and rice. They add herbs to the milk and rice to provide nutrition to the body tissues. It also gives relief for stiffness and muscle pain.
