Backaches and back pain in general is an all-too common ailment for many. In fact, tens of millions of Americans will regularly experience back pain, which can make just going through the motions of life very uncomfortable. If you find yourself with an aching back every morning, it could be your bed that is behind your pain. Instead of continuing to wake up in agony, it is a good idea to consider treating yourself to a new mattress.

Choose the Right Type of Mattress

In order to make sure you get a mattress that actually helps you, you need to be sure to choose the right kind of mattress. In general, the best mattress for backache are ones that offer ample support to a person’s back, without being too stiff or uncomfortable. However, the right mattress for one person might not be right for the next. Some people might want a bit more softness in their mattress. In order to find the best, it is a good idea to test out a couple different types to see if any aggravate your pain, or help to alleviate it. Also, familiarize yourself with the different kinds of mattresses to know which you prefer. Some will like a traditional innerspring mattress, some will like memory foam, and others may prefer late foam. There is no right or wrong answer, as long as the mattress and bed work for you.

Know How You Sleep

However, in order to truly choose the right type of mattress for your needs, you have to be aware of how you sleep. There are several different sleeping positions, and many people will often have one they default to. You could sleep on your back, on your side, your stomach or in several other potential positions. The sleeping position you have can help dictate the type of mattress that is generally better for your body. It could even be your sleeping position itself that is contributing to your pain. In order to truly get to the bottom of your back pain, it’s a good idea to try out some other sleeping positions if possible to see if you still wake up in pain.

Monitor How You Feel Over Time

While a bad or uncomfortable mattress can certainly lead to back pain, it is far from the only reason that you might have a backache. Once you get a new mattress, keep tabs on how your back pain feels over time. Is it better instantly? Did nothing change? Did it get better for a while only to get worse? When you do have pain, include other information like what position you slept in, how long you slept for, stress levels etc... Keeping track like this can help you track what the pain is caused by and can help you see if it truly was your bed that was causing the issues. If you are still experiencing pain, even after trying different sleeping positions, your back pain might have a different origin. If you find yourself struggling with backaches, one of the best things you could do is get a new mattress. If you get the right kind, it can not only help improve your back pain, but could also lead to longer and more comfortable sleep at night.
