In the hardware shop you will find out that the price of chicken coops is quite high, but feed and feeding items are reasonably priced. Therefore, it is good that you make plans to possibly construct your own backyard chicken coop.

First you would have to choose the correct backyard chicken coop plan. The plan should take into account the number of chickens you plan to raise. It should also involve the number of nesting boxes to provide and the kind of run you intend to give them. If your chickens are the free ranging type then there must be a lot of space for them to move about during the day. An enclosed run beside their quarters should be available. Pegs or poles should also be raised off the ground in their enclosures. This provides a good environment for them to settle. A simple design that takes into account how the eggs are to be taken out should also be in place. Safety measures for the chicken coop are a priority to keep out intruders. As a rule of thumb, the design for the backyard chicken coop should be simple to follow. You could also provide pictures of what the design is supposed to look like.

The next thing to consider is the tools and materials to be used in the building process. List all the items you would need. Obviously the materials needed depend on the design chosen but they mostly revolve around the same thing. These include wood, hinges, nails, screws and chicken wire. These should not normally cost above $150. Then there is the issue about the tools. You would be surprised that these tools could actually be in your garage. The tools are just a saw, screwdriver and hammer. In order to make sure that the pieces of wood were of the required size you would also need a measuring tape.
When you have gathered all the necessary materials and tools for your backyard chicken coop, make sure you read through your plans. This is to ensure that you know what you are doing.

In terms of the actual construction it is good to start with the nesting boxes first. Then steadily build the chicken coop bit by bit. If you are able to start early enough you could even be putting finishing touches to it by the end of the day.

It is good to mention here again the cost involved in the construction process. Constructing a good backyard chicken coop entails using very good materials. Never go in for materials which are cheaper than their market prices. If you are not careful you could wake up to a crumbled backyard chicken coop after some few months. Inferior materials are indeed cheaper than you even thought but can disappoint you in the long run.

If you need to extend your chicken base you could always refer to your chicken coop building plans to make another one. Indeed good plans can save a lot of time.
