Bacterial vaginosis infection is a disease affecting many women. It is estimated that one in four women suffer from this condition at any given time, and is believed to be common among sexually active women between the ages of fifteen and forty years. It is an infection which affects the vagina area when its natural environment is disturbed, as a result of the overgrowth of certain kinds of bacteria that dwells in the vagina. A normal healthy vagina contains both good and bad bacteria. The good bacteria protect the vagina and keep the bad bacteria in check. But when the bad bacteria multiply rapidly due to various reasons and then outnumber the good bacteria, then this causes the infection to occur.

The exact cause of the imbalance between the good and bad bacteria is still unknown, but certain factors or actions may increase the risk of developing this infection, and these include; smoking, excessive vagina douching, having multiple sexual partners, unprotected sex, wearing thong, using vaginal spray and use of inter-uterine devices for birth control.

Typical symptoms of bacterial vaginosis infections include excessive vaginal discharge, which is usually greyish white accompanied by foul fishy odor. Other symptoms include vagina itching, burning sensation and abdominal pains.
The symptoms of this condition can cause anxiety and embarrassment and this can adversely affect your social and professional lifestyles. However, if you are at the risk of developing this condition, it is possible to prevent this disease affecting your life by taking certain steps.

To prevent bacteria vaginosis infection, the following steps are very important;

The first step you need to take is to undergo occasional medical check ups. In most women this infection may not necessarily produce any observable symptoms, but it is important to request for occasional laboratory test in order to ascertain your condition with regards to the infection.

Another important step is to maintain high levels of personal hygiene. Wash your vagina daily with warm water and unscented soap. Always trim or shave your pubic hair, as they tend to harbour germs and smell if they are too bushy. Try to wear loose and clean underwear and pants and remember to change your underwear everyday.

Engaging in protected sex especially with a new partner is another important step to prevent this infection. Ensure that your partner uses condom whenever you are planning to have sexual intercourse. This will prevent you from contacting this disease as well as other vaginal infection.

Healthy eating habit is also a major step towards preventing this infection. Fruits and vegetables have high fibers content, so incorporate them into your daily diet. Fruits such as apples and cranberry contain antioxidants which can help to eliminate vagina odor. Ensure that you drink plenty of water everyday. Water will help to flush out toxins from your body.
