Many cultures have regarded pipe smoking as a status symbol and pipe smoking has various representations in modern society. From Native American special ceremonies that included pipe smoking to depictions of immigrants in movies like “The Godfather,” tobacco smoking is a part of our culture. Pipe smoking in today’s society extends beyond movies and history; it can be a practical alternative to expensive cigarettes or a preference for some smoking aficionados. For those who intend to buy a pipe, basic information and advice on what to consider prior to purchasing may be helpful.

Corn cob pipes are always recommended for those who are only learning to smoke tobacco for the first time. These pipes are very affordable and often cost between $5 and $10. This is an ideal price point for learning about pipe smoking.

In case corn cob pipes do not seem fashionable enough, estate pipes may also be purchased. These are second hand pipes which can be purchased with prices ranging from $20 to $75. This depends on where the pipe is purchased as well as the quality and condition of the pipe.

Brand new pipes are also available in abundance. When purchasing a pipem a thorough inspection must be done first. Holding the pipe helps in checking quality, condition, and weight. It’s always better to choose a pipe which feels light. This makes it easier to handle with while smoking.

In terms of quality and condition, pick pipes that are smooth and free of cuts and unappealing stains on the pipe itself and inside its bowl. The stem must be connected securely to the shank too. Otherwise, the pipe may be easily broken.

Ask to use the pipe to smoke if possible. The type of smoke produced also tells something about the pipe. Superior pipes always produce a clean and quiet kind of smoke, while inferior pipes will produce smoke of lesser quality and taste. If it is not possible to smoke with the pipe prior to final purchase, be sure to ask about the return policy in case the pipe is not of superior quality. When purchasing a pipe, quality should be considered before the price. Immediately choosing what is cheaper without proper inspection may end up in a disastrous choice.

All these tips apply not only for new smokers but even for seasoned ones. New pipes differ based on material used. Some types of pipes include clay pipes, calabash pipes, briar pipes, meerschaum pipes, and hookah pipes. Hookah pipes are water pipes. These pipes cool down tobacco smoke by letting it pass through a chamber filled with water.

Glass water pipes may also be used to smoke tobacco. Glass pipes allow tobacco to be smoked at its purest form unlike other pipes which may pass on the material’s taste to the cigar, like with wood pipes. Glass pipes are one of the oldest mediums in pipe smoking they can be traced to as early as 1500 B.C.

These are only a few types which can be chosen for those who need to buy a pipe. Despite these useful recommendations, personal preferences should still be followed when it comes to buying a pipe.
