Breast cancer and breast awareness about it both spreading rapidly in the present world due to number of factors such as number of cancer cases is increasing due to increased population, and awareness is increasing due to efforts of cancer care organizations, and media.
People should understand the fact that breast cancer can affect anyone anytime as it is not specified to a certain area, age group or gender. Yes, men can also develop it, however the ratio is lower in them but risk is there. Generally people think that it is associated to hereditary factors, but it’s not true in all cases that it attacks someone due to this reason.
Studies have shown that death rate due to breast cancer is higher in women who don’t get their breast checked on regular basis from doctor for abnormal changes. Doctors examine breasts to look for changes in the appearance as well as structure of breast.
It is called clinical examination because women visit the doctor for this check up, and breasts are examined both visually, and manually. Visual inspection is for locating the changes in appearance such as
    • Change in shape, contour or size of breast can be observed during visual inspection. • Skin changes that include appearance of wrinkles, pucker, and dimple on breast skin. • A doctor looks for shape and position of nipple as well during this examination because any change in nipple can be due to breast cancer such as inversion of nipple rnThese changes are observed from different angles, and doctor compare both breasts as well in terms of size, shape, skin type etc because both should be symmetrical, because change in size, or shape without any significant reason can be harbinger of breast cancer. Manual examination is also the part of clinical examination because doctors look for the changes that affect structure of breast such as • Breasts are touched by palms or finger pads to feel lumps in breast or armpit. Chest is also inspected to find out lump because breast tissues are spread over the chest as well so the lump can be formed there as well. • Different levels of pressure are exerted to feel the tissues of different levels as women breasts are complex in structure so it is necessary to feel the tissues at the surface, and in depth. Finger pads are moved in circles to feel breast tissues, and development of lump in those tissues. • Nipples are squeezed with the help of fingers to check is there any unwanted fluid coming out of nipples that can indicate breast cancer. Bloody, yellow, milky, and green fluid can come out of nipples can be one of breast cancer symptoms. • Temperature of breast is also observed by touching it with hands, and if it is higher than rest of the body with some rashes on it, the reason can be inflammatory breast cancer.
A woman should go for this examination regularly, and performing self examination along with this examination improves the chances of early detection because a woman can feel abnormal changes easily if she stays in touch with this part of the body regularly.
