Communicating in a way that is easily understood can happen when you are truly present with the conversation and the person you are talking to. If we are lost in our thoughts, then what we say and how we say it could be different than what we mean. If we are emotionally distracted, our words could contain emotions we do not intend to deliver. When we are present and fully with the other person, with no other thoughts or distracting emotions, then we become very clear. Being focused with the intention to be where you are and in the conversation allows you to fully engage and to be understood. When we are misunderstood, we are communicating from a distance, so to speak; we may not have been completely present with the other person and what we were trying to say. No matter if it is an important conversation or not, stay present. In fact, it is usually the conversations we do not think matter that we do not give our full attention too. We only partially pay attention because we value our thoughts or emotions we are having as more important than the conversation. But how the other person understands us could be very different from our intentions. This of course causes problems because when we are distracted, we do not to notice the conversation or the other person as much as we could. To maintain your focus with others, especially when you are distracted, try to bring yourself back to an aware place. You can do this by clearing your mind of anything that is not pertinent to the conversation. Value the other person’s attention by giving them yours. If you are emotionally unavailable because you are wrapped up in your emotions, then, for the moment, put them aside. Allow all of yourself to be present in the conversation, then what you intend to say will occur. If your intention is to be present with the other person during the conversation, you will become present within as well. If all of your attention is on the words you wish to say, then you will say them as you meant to. If all of your attention is on this other person, then how you express something will truly reflect what you intended. All you really need to do to become a better communicator is to be present. Be present within yourself by putting distracting emotions or thoughts to the side so that you are clear. Be present with the other person so that what they hear and feel from you is truly what you wanted to say.
